Old and Miswritten Postcards Can Be Exchanged for Letter Packs
In 2024, my father-in-law passed away. When I sent out mourning postcards, I added a note saying that I would stop sending New Year’s cards. As a result, I received almost no New Year’s cards in 2025. This year, after the mourning period ended, I wondered how many would arrive—but only five did. It seems people carefully noticed the message on my mourning postcard and removed me from their address lists. Some of them were distant relatives, former colleagues, or friends from my student days—people I had stayed in touch with only through New Year’s cards. I did feel a slight sense of sadness about cutting off these thin connections, but if I kept even a few recipients, I would never escape the hassle of New Year’s cards. So I decided to stop completely.Since five people were kind enough to send cards this year, I decided to send them seasonal winter greeting cards instead. At home, I only had some old 50-yen postcards that had turned slightly yellow. They didn’t look very nice, but I ended up using them by adding extra stamps. I was once again surprised to learn that the current postcard rate has gone up to 85 yen.I also took this opportunity to bring miswritten New Year’s cards and unused old postcards to the post office to exchange them. As many of you may know, the exchange rules are roughly as follows:When exchanging miswritten postcards, a handling fee of 6 yen per card is required (for up to 100 cards). Not only unused cards but also miswritten ones can be exchanged—for example, wrong addresses, printing on the wrong side, or ink smudges on photo cards. Cards with names or addresses written on them are acceptable.Leftover cards from last year or very old postcards are also fine. However, cards cannot be exchanged if the printed postage area is damaged. If you exchange 100 cards or more, the handling fee increases to 13 yen per card, and the cards must be sorted by type and value.New Year’s cards that became unusable due to the death of a close family member can be exchanged free of charge.Cash refunds are not available. What I learned this time was that you can exchange them not only for stamps or postcards, but also for Letter Packs. To be honest, I rarely use postcards or stamps, so exchanging them didn’t seem very useful. But Letter Packs are a different story. They can hold items up to 3 cm thick and 4 kg in weight, can be mailed from a post box, and include tracking numbers. I use Letter Packs frequently for work. The total exchange value this time was 3,977 yen. After deducting the handling fees, I received eight Letter Packs and two postcards, paying
