I’ve Pre-Ordered the Canon EOS R8 Mark II!
【2026年10月29日発売】 CANON|キヤノン EOS R8 Mark II・RF45 F1.2 STM レンズキット ミラーレス一眼カメラ [単焦点レンズ]キヤノン EOS R8 Mark II ボディ 《2026年10月29日発売予定 発売日にお渡し》Canon has announced the EOS R8 Mark II, the successor to the EOS R8, released in 2023. It is a camera that has long been rumored to feature a retro design. From the photos, it looks boxy and unlike Canon’s recent designs, though not particularly retro. It actually reminds me more of some recent Sony models. The biggest upgrade is the addition of in-body image stabilization (IBIS). This has made the body considerably thicker and added nearly 100 grams to its weight, but it still weighs only around 500 grams. Another welcome improvement is the addition of an AF joystick.I bought the original R8 shortly after its release and have used it for almost three years. It was a major upgrade from my previous RP, and I was pleased with many of its features. However, I was disappointed by its plasticky design, which was not much different from the RP, and its cheap-sounding shutter, which made a rather unpleasant clack. It never quite satisfied my desire to own a camera that felt special.According to the review below, however, the shutter sound has been significantly improved this time. The reviewer says the shutter sounds much more refined than that of the original R8, making photography more enjoyable. It may not match the premium feel of the R5 Mark II or R6 Mark III, but it is a substantial improvement.Battery life is another concern, but I already own two spare batteries, so I can manage by swapping them as needed. The price is also attractive considering the addition of IBIS. Map Camera lists it at ¥247,500, and Canon is offering a ¥20,000 cashback promotion from launch, bringing the effective price down to ¥227,500. That strikes me as quite competitive.Map Camera is also offering a trade-in bonus of up to 18% for pre-orders. If I trade in my current R8, I expect the upgrade to cost around ¥100,000 out of pocket. So I decided to pre-order one straight away. My main reasons are:・I like the boxy design・The shutter sound and feel appear to have improved.・IBIS should be particularly useful with my RF45mm f/1.2 lens.・It should work well with my other lenses: the RF24-105mm f/4-7.1, RF35mm f/1.8, and RF85mm f/2.・I can continue using my two spare batteries.・The launch price is relatively reasonable by Canon’s recent standards.・The trade-in bonus and cashback should keep the upgrade cost to around ¥100,000.The camera is due to be released on October 29, about a month from now. If I pre-order it now, it should arrive on launch day, just in time for the autumn foliage season. As smartphone cameras have improved, I have increasingly found it a chore to carry a dedicated camera around. This might be my last camera upgrade, but on the other hand, the EOS R8 Mark II could give me a much-needed boost and rekindle my enthusiasm for photography. That hope was another reason I was so quick to place my pre-order.
