話飲徒然草〜Tokyo Meanderings

最近少しばかり紅茶に注目している。

といっても、あくまでティーバッグの範囲内である。茶葉の状態で購入してポットで入れた方が美味しく入れられるのだろうが、洗い物が増えるのでやりたくない（笑）。
コーヒーについても決して豆の状態では購入せず、店で挽いてもらっているが、これも同様の理由である。

そのティーバッグの淹れ方も、これまでは単にマグカップにジャバジャバと注いでいただけだったが、YOUTUBEの動画に倣って、熱湯を注いだ跡にそっとティーバッグを浸し、2分程度しっかり蒸らしたあと、取り出すときにも絞りすぎないようにするといった点を意識したら、ずいぶんと味が整った感じになるのが目から鱗だった。

今は何種類かのティーバッグを買って、好みの銘柄を探している段階である。もっともよく飲んでいるのが近所のカルディで購入するジャンナッツのアールグレイだ。

アールグレイという紅茶は、最初ダージリンやアッサムなどと同じく茶葉の名前だとばかり思っていた。それにしてはずいぶん独特の香りだなぁと長年思っていたのだが、真実はなんと、ベルガモットを加えたいわばフレーバード・ティーだということだった。

ではなぜアールグレイがこれほど知名度が高いかといえば、英国紅茶の超大手トワイニングが開発して主力商品として長年展開してきたかららしい。
それであらためてトワイニングの紅茶を調べてみると、他に「レディグレイ」という紅茶があることに気が付いた。
レディグレイ（Lady Grey）は、トワイニングの登録商標で、アールグレイをベースにオレンジピールやレモンピール、矢車菊などを加えたフレーバーティーです。アールグレイより柑橘系の香りが華やかでフルーティー、軽やかな味わいが特徴で、2001年に日本で本格販売されて以来人気があります。

全然知らなかった。
というわけで、さっそくカルディで購入して飲んでみた。
はっきりとしたオレンジなどの柑橘フレーバーがある。あまりに柑橘フレーバーが勝ちすぎていて、紅茶本来の繊細さをスポイルしている気もするし、ミルクティーにはあまりしたくない。とはいえ、溌溂としたフレーバーや余韻のスッキリした感じが心地よく、これはこれで悪くないとも思った。

I’ve recently taken a bit of an interest in tea.
That said, I’m still operating strictly within the realm of tea bags. I’m sure buying loose leaves and brewing them in a pot would produce a better cup, but I’d rather not deal with the extra washing up (laugh). The same goes for coffee—I never buy whole beans; I have them ground at the shop for the same reason.

Until recently, I would simply pour hot water straight into a mug and be done with it. But after watching a few YouTube videos, I started gently placing the tea bag into freshly boiled water, letting it steep properly for about two minutes, and being careful not to squeeze it too hard when removing it. It was eye-opening how much more balanced the flavor became.
At the moment, I’m trying several kinds of tea bags to find my favorite. The one I drink most often is Earl Grey by Janat, which I buy at a nearby KALDI Coffee Farm.
For a long time, I assumed Earl Grey was the name of a tea leaf, like Darjeeling or Assam. I had always found its aroma quite distinctive, but it turns out that Earl Grey is actually a flavored tea scented with bergamot.

As for why Earl Grey is so well known, it seems that the major British tea company Twinings developed and promoted it as one of its flagship products for many years.
When I looked more closely at Twinings’ lineup, I discovered another tea called Lady Grey. Lady Grey is a registered trademark of Twinings. It is based on Earl Grey but blended with orange peel, lemon peel, and cornflower petals. Compared with Earl Grey, it has a brighter, fruitier citrus aroma and a lighter taste, and it has been popular in Japan since its full-scale launch in 2001.
