1 Recent Lunches & Dining Out – Part 1
One of my favorite spots, Hirose Yohei Shoten, serves a daily rice bowl special—and this month’s was gapao (Thai basil chicken). What I love about it is the char-grilled aroma of the meat and the generous helping of vegetables on top. It’s both flavorful and satisfying. I stopped by Hachimaki, a long-standing tempura shop on Suzuran Street, and had their shrimp tempura rice bowl (ebi tendon). It cost less than ¥1,000—great value. The place usually has a long line at lunchtime, but thanks to the stormy weather that day, I was able to walk right in. I had a light dinner with a drink at my local Ginza Aster in Sangenjaya.By the way, what’s in the glass may look like wine—but it’s actually Shaoxing rice wine. Little Mermaid on Suzuran Street in Jinbocho is one of my go-to spots for lunch—the eat-in space is cozy and comfortable. That said, the price for a meal like this ends up exceeding ¥1,000. Also in Jinbocho, Sagaya serves 100% buckwheat soba. It’s a bit pricey for a stand-and-eat soba place, but the noodles—especially the cold soba—are genuinely delicious. When I went to Shinbashi recently, I stopped by Kameya, one of the original stand-and-eat soba shops famous for its "tentama soba" (tempura and egg soba). The broth is rich and flavorful, and the portion size is generous. Also in Shinbashi, I had the shungiku tempura soba at Tanbaya. The interior is still quite shabby, but the taste is excellent. After my English conversation class, I had lunch at a Korean restaurant, Daidai Shibuya Stream.I ordered bibimbap. The staff were a bit unfriendly, but I thought the food was quite good. I had the Gochi Buta set meal at Gochi Buta Shibuya South Exit. The barley miso was flavorful, and the rice portion was a regular serving. It also came with a free coupon for fried horse mackerel. I ordered a Napolitan pasta at Baasha, a traditional coffee shop near the Chiyoda Metropolitan Tax Office. The taste was decent, the price was reasonable, and cozy atmosphere. If a place like this were near my workplace, I’d definitely become a regular. At Sojibo in Sangenjaya, I had a set of chilled bukkake soba and a negitoro rice bowl. It’s not bad, but for some reason the place just doesn’t leave much of an impression.
