description In the near future when people become uninterested in boxing and similar sports, a new sport is created - Robot boxing wherein robots battle each other while being controlled by someone. Charlie Kenton, a former boxer whos trying to make it in the new sport, not only doesnt do well, he is very deeply in the red. When he learns that his ex, mother of his son Max, dies, he goes to figure out what to do with him. His exs sister wants to take him in but Charlie has first say in the matter. Charlie asks her husband for money so he can buy a new Robot in exchange for turning Max over to them. He takes Max for the summer. And Max improves his control of his robot. But when the robot is destroyed, they go to a scrap yard to get parts. Max finds an old generation robot named Atom and restores him. Max wants Atom to fight but Charlie tells him he wont last a round. However, Atom wins. And it isnt long before Atom is getting major bouts. Max gets Charlie to teach Atom how to fight, and the father and son bond strenghtens

Kids only? What? I enjoyed this. Thankfully, they did not go into the direction I expected them to, which would have been robots hurting people.
The wolverine does a decent job here, as do the other actors. Kind of hard to unsee Hugh Jackman as being the wolverine, but by the end of the movie, you do realize he's a different guy here.
Simple movie, but if you're a kid or think like one - go for it.

Wtf! I mean W-T-F! This film was shocking. OK in 2000 the special effects alone would have made this a great movie but its 2011 now and the special effects in this are pretty much the norm.
This film had a good IMDb rating and so i thought I'd give it a go at the cinema. What I got was vomit inducing sentimentality, characters that were either borderline parodies of themselves or entirely unbelievable and a story-line that left a lot to be desired. In addition the science required a suspension of disbelieve that was beyond me. I mean; fighting robots that operate via voice recognition, or even more laughably in "shadow mode" where they simply copy what they "see. Where's the immersive VR suites with biofeedback? That would have been a lot more believable. Fighters controlling their robots via the web from the comfort of their homes. It wouldn't have taken a lot to make this aspect of the film a lot more believable. Also it was set too near in the future. By the time we have robots as advanced as these we won't be filling up trucks with fossil fuels (something I noticed happening more than once - sponsorship from big oil?
In its defence the kid actor was pretty good insofar as he could be with the sh1t script he's been given and the idea that kids would speak Japanese in the future due to the superiority of their online games was a nice touch (though I think Chinese is just as likely.
All in all a huge disappointment. I left the cinema after the final showdown about 5-10 minutes before the film ended when I just couldn't take any more of the attempted tear jerking. My friend left after an hour and preferred to sit outside playing on his phone until the film ended. An 11 year old might like this. Any adult with a normal IQ will not.
Oh, and watch out for the prolonged Budweiser product placement at the beginning of the film. Considering this is a kids film I thought that was a little bit naughty.

SPOILER ALERT This movie is just the right movie, with a combo of perfect robo fight scenes and some decent characterization. Charlie(Hugh Jackman) is a big a* who doesn't know what he's doing, and the little kid is a better business man then him, even though challenging Zeus after one Pro fight is a little extreme. The story is a little predictable and some parts that are just a little dumb, like the classic stand on a cliff-fall down-find something valuable scene. Also you might notice some cracks on Atom's face, which looks vaguely like a mouth and nose, which might be some discreet attempt at adding more heart to the movie? Overall this movie is pretty decent to watch, with amazing CGI and a rank of 7/10 stars.
