Is Third-Hand Smoke A Hazard? ソース: NPR: Science Friday Podcast 09/01/09 Some scientists say toxins from cigarette smoke can cling to furniture and clothing after the smoke wafts away, possibly posing a danger to infants and children. Jonathan Winickoff discusses his new paper on the public's perception of the risk of third-hand smoke.Third-Hand Smoke: You know smoking can be hazardous to your health. Then came 'second-hand smoke.' Now, health researchers are cautioning about 'third-hand smoke' -- residues from smoking that linger on surfaces. Is it hazardous?"The third-hand smoke idea—concern over that—has been around for a long time. It's only recently been given a name and studied," Smokers themselves are also contaminated…smokers actually emit toxins [from clothing and hair]. Who gets exposure to those surfaces? Babies and children are closer to [surfaces such as floors].Children ingest twice the amount of dust that grown-ups do. The infant ingests twice the dust [due to faster respiration and proximity to dusty surfaces]. Effectively, they'll get 20 times the exposure. 69 CommentsMichaelJMcFadden at 07:25 AM on 01/08/09抜粋 How does this translate into any sort of findings about any "threat" or "danger" to our children?Simple answer: it doesn't. At all. Go read the study and you'll see I'm correct. The authors did no original research other than look over an opinion survey. However the media has spun this into hysterical heights. The NY Times went so far as to emphasize twice in one article that "third-hand smoke" contains Polonium 210, and highlighted the way this "deadly radioactive" element was used to murder a Russian KGB agent NPR: Science Friday Podcast [NPR] Science Friday, as heard on NPR, is a weekly discussion of the latest news in science, technology, health, and the environment hosted by Ira Flatow.
