幼稚園でとっている月刊絵本を片付けていたら
あるタイトルが目に留まった。 「きかんしゃホブノブ」 Ruth Ainsworthという作者の作品で HOB NOBという名前の機関車が 色々な動物を乗せて遊園地に行くお話。 ・・・というのも、実践ビジ英にhobnobという単語が 出て来たから。 (Cambridge) hobnob: to spend time being friendly with someone who is important or famous: She often has her picture in the papers, hobnobbing with the rich and famous. (Longman) hobnob : to spend time talking to people who are in a higher social position than you He spent the first day hobnobbing with the management. ちなみに英辞郎には語源が載っていた。 ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー 【語源】16世紀から使われた表現で最初はhab or nab, hob or nob, habnabなどと つづっており、"have and not have(=give and take)"という意味だった。 シェークスピアの劇で使われており、当時は二人でお互いに乾杯をしたり 相手に酒をおごったりするという、「さしつさされつする」状況を表したものであった。 19世紀になり酒との関連が無くなった。 ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー もとはシェークスピアだったのね! 面白い お気に入りの記事を「いいね!」で応援しよう
