In a new interview with GQ Hype Spain, Demi Lovato opened up about her decision to publicly use she/her pronouns after previously expressing that she identified more with the pronouns they/them.

“I constantly had to educate people and explain why I identified with those pronouns,” Lovato told the outlet, translated from Spanish to English by People. “It was absolutely exhausting. I just got tired. But for that very reason, I know that it is important to continue spreading the word.”

Lovato also said that she wishes there were more public gender-neutral spaces. “I face this every day,” she said. “For example, in public toilets. Having to access the women's bathroom, even though I don't completely identify with it. Or it also happens when filling out forms, such as government documents or any other where you have to specify your gender. You only have two options, male and female, and I feel like none of that makes sense to me.”

In her March 2021 Glamour cover story, Demi Lovato opened up about her identity, saying, “I know who I am and what I am, but I’m just waiting until a specific timeline to come out to the world as what I am,” Lovato tells me. “I’m following my healers’ timeline, and I’m using this time to really study and educate myself on my journey and what I’m preparing to do.”

Lovato then came out as nonbinary that May in a video shared on Instagram. "Today is a day I'm so happy to share more of my life with you all—I am proud to let you know that I identify as non-binary and will officially be changing my pronouns to they/them moving forward,” Lovato said.
