For a start, OK, I had literally nooooo expectations of this small-town, coming-of-age cliché fest which seemed to me as original as a school concert rendition of 'Oh Come All Ye Faithful' all though this time with rather more, um, advanced language. But I agreed to see it on the basis that Friends had been rescheduled and heck, it was River Phoenix! What can I say, I'm shallow. I was knocked back, literally. OK, maybe not literally, but as good as. It was, in the words of my father, a good little film. The young actors were precocious little brats from what I could see, at first anyway, but they really developed with the plot of the film. River was at his finest, but then that is what I always say. The others seemed like the makings of fine actors. And one of the best parts was the fact that they didn't spend all their time having gross conversations about girls, unlike many twelve year old males I know, but then they aren't exactly River Phoenix so what do you expect? I thought it was too short, but there were some both funny and moving moments that I treasure. I think I could probably allow myself to watch this movie again. It was cute. Stand By Me is my favourite Phoenix film next to My Own Private Idaho, which I saw extremely illegally but enjoyed immensely. Though this lacks the certain wooden touch of a Keanu Reeves picture (which can actually only be a bad thing) it has nice backdrops, boyish 50s charm through the swearing, and I'm a sucker for this stuff. What can I say? I'm shallow.

This movie is in my opinion one of the greatest movies adapted from a book to portray the emotions and camaradery of 4 twelve year old boys. I think most if not all men can reflect on their adolescence and identify with all of the boys. Every man knows and can compare each of the boys in the movie with their friends from that age. The story is timeless. Setting the picture in the late 1950's seems so fitting as the issues dealt with in the movie would have seemed so taboo in those ages. It portrays the journey every boy makes to become a man symbolically in near perfect fashion. Although the boys who acted in this movie were very young their roles were played beautifully. This is a must see movie.

My summary was the important thing, I watched this on a movie channel the other day and was shocked to see it had an R rating. While parts of the story are intense trust me you can leave your teens to watch this, and they might actually learn something about the world or themselves.

Also, I saw a comment about how these kids couldn't act, NOTHING could be farther from the truth I'm sure 95% of the people who saw this movie would have a seizure if they saw that comment. This is probably some of the best acting you'll ever see from kids of this age. A brain tumor is the only possible answer to his observation.

Labyrinth,The Princess Bride,The Sandlot,Goonies this movie is right in there, one of the classic movies for any age.
