A mixture of dread and anger has been expressed in Gaza in response to the restart of conflict between Israel and Hamas. The United Nations has referred to this situation as a "nightmare occurrence."
A temporary ceasefire came to an end at 7:00 (5:00 GMT), with both sides of the conflict pointing the finger of blame at one another.
Since then, the health ministry of Gaza, which is managed by Hamas, has reported that Israeli attacks have resulted in the deaths of 178 individuals.
According to a United Nations official, since the ceasefire came to an end, aid that was desperately needed had stopped entering through the Rafah crossing.
The Israeli military had invaded several regions of northern Gaza on Friday morning, and the sound of heavy gunfire could be heard in such places. At the same time, fighting broke out between Israeli forces and Hamas members.
Following the ceasefire, it appeared that there was no slowdown in the intensity of the fighting, as jet fighters and reconnaissance planes were constantly being deployed.
What factors led to the conclusion of the truce in Gaza?
The northwestern part of Gaza and Khan Younis in the south were among the areas that were targeted by air attacks. Khan Younis was the location where hundreds of thousands of people fled earlier in the conflict in order to escape the fighting in the north. Houses in the city were targeted, including one residence that was located in close proximity to Nasser hospital, which was the location where the BBC Arabic team conducted their operations.
A voice message that was provided to the BBC was received by Mohammad Ghalaiyini, a British citizen who is now in Khan Younis with his family. He stated that the drones began flying at approximately 6:30 a.m. "Around 07:30, I think, the bombings started and there's been like non-stop bombing every 10, 15, 20 minutes."
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) distributed leaflets that warned that areas east of Khan Younis and Salah al-Din were "dangerous" conflict zones. The leaflets also urged individuals in certain locations to seek shelter in Rafah, which is located farther south and is close to the Egyptian border.
While this was going on, rockets were being fired at Israel by Hamas and other groups. Israel responded by deploying its Iron Dome defense system to intercept the rockets.
According to James Elder, a spokesman for the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef), the renewed confrontations were "catastrophic for the people of Gaza." This description was provided to the BBC.
He stated that Nasser hospital, which he claimed was now Gaza's largest operating medical institution, was "wildly overflowing with children and people with wounds of war recovering from the last attack." Mr. Elder made this statement with reference to the hospital.
At the hospital, he stated that a great number of families had been sleeping on mattresses for several weeks.
"This hospital cannot possibly cope with a surge in wounds from the battlefield with more children with burns, with those horrendous shrapnel injuries," claimed the commander.
It has been reported by other United Nations relief agencies that comparable situations exist in other hospitals.
According to Rob Holden, a senior emergency officer for the World Health Organization (WHO), the situation at al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza City was "like a horror movie" even before the bombardment started again.
Patients with "the most horrific injuries" were reported to be laying on floors that were "running with blood" by his team, who had visited the location earlier in the week. Meanwhile, the bodies of those who had been killed were arranged in a line in the parking lot outside the building.
According to the World Health Organization, just 18 of Gaza's 36 facilities are still "minimally to partially functional."
"Gaza's health system has been crippled by the ongoing hostilities," said Richard Peeperkorn, the representative of the World Health Organization in the Palestinian territories during the conflict. "We are extremely concerned about the resumption of violence."
Regarding the overall humanitarian situation in Gaza, which is likely to become even more dire once the combat continues, there is also a significant amount of anxiety.
In light of the fact that there is a critical shortage of cooking gas, food, and water, shops are completely empty, and there is not enough relief to provide to people who have been displaced.
The BBC has been informed by a number of people that they are having difficulty coping with the chilly weather conditions and that they are sleeping in tents. They are exerting a great deal of effort to ensure that additional relief, particularly warm clothing, is given.
According to them, hospitals are receiving an extremely limited amount of water, food, and medicine.
WHO fears that diseases could kill more people in Gaza than bombs could.
According to Philippe Lazzarini, the head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which is responsible for providing help to Palestinian refugees, he is more than just concerned about the fact that "no humanitarian aid has been allowed into Gaza today including fuel."
Even though hundreds of relief trucks were able to enter Gaza during the seven-day ceasefire, the number of trucks that were able to enter Gaza was still significantly lower than the approximately 500 trucks that entered Gaza each and every day before to the violence.
Hamas could have insured that the break in hostilities was extended if they had liberated more hostages, according to Mark Regev, a senior adviser to the Israeli prime minister, who stated this on Friday.
"They have close to 20 women [eligible for release] in the framework of the existing agreement, yet they chose not to do so," Mr. Regev told the British broadcaster.
While Mr. Regev was being questioned about whether or not those women were Israeli soldiers or civilians, he responded that some of the women were in their 20s and had completed their military service.
On the other hand, Hamas asserts that it did make a number of proposals concerning additional hostage releases; however, Israel did not accept any of these proposals.
In a statement released on Friday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) admitted that their military operations had targeted Hamas command centers, subterranean installations, and groups of Hamas fighters.
Since Israel began its military operation against Hamas in Gaza, officials in Gaza have reported that more than 14,800 people, including approximately 6,000 children, have been murdered. It is thought that many more people are believed to be dead under debris by this point.
Hamas carried out an attack on Israel on October 7th, during which it was responsible for the deaths of around 1,200 people and the kidnapping of 240 more.
