Hugh Jackman is a robot fighter and doesn't win much. He owes a lot of money as he doesn't pay up on his losing bets. When his ex dies, she leaves behind, Max his 11 year old estranged son. He sells the "rights" of parenthood over to his ex's here's the catch. The new parents are going to Italy and they need Hugh to take care of his son for the summer until they get back. Got the plot figured out yet? Yawn.
While this sounds similar to "Paper Moon" Dakota Goyo is no Tatum O'Neill. Jackman comes across as Clint Eastwwood light. Jackman and Goyo were unconvincing in their roles, doing little more than reading lines. On the other hand, Evangeline Lilly as Hugh's girlfriend, gives us a good performance, what little we see of her. At times the movie was more like "Short Circuit" than "Rocky" demonstrating its appeal to children. Electronic money transfers apparently have disappeared in this age and everything is done in cash, making it easier to get beat up and robbed.
In the stadium runway, Goyo gets tossed a t-shirt aka "Mean" Joe Greene commercial style. The robot special effects were fantastic. But what really made the movie unbelievable was that the 11 year old hates hamburgers. There is an underground amateur boxing circuit where robots box. I liked this aspect of the movie as it has quirky characters and that "Thunder Dome Mad Max" aspect to it. Unfortunately there wasn't enough of it. They could of made all kind of odd bots with weird owners, but opted to have Jackman recite dull cliche lines instead. The climax not only reminds you of a "Rocky" rope-a-dope episode, they also stole lines from the film. While the special effects were great, the script was pure plagiarism, an "F" for originality.
Good big screen production. No f-bombs, sex, or nudity.
