One of my favorite things about the film is the use of color schemes. Light hues such as baby blue, lime green, and sunny yellow are mainly calming colors. But the use of them in a horror film put me out of my comfort zone more than I would have been in a typical slasher film. This might be me just over analyzing too, but I think that the pastels in the more gruesome parts of the movie are meant to confuse the main characters about what they perceive as normal and comforting vs everything else. The cult is attempting to blur the line between “right” and “wrong” and the color scheme proved that even more for me.

This movie is not like any movie I've ever seen, I can't put a genre on it, and that's what makes it that good, you gotta be pretty stoned to sit through the whole thing though lol.

Great analysis. Yours is the first I've seen on youtube that didn't miss these big points. The best thing about Midsommar is that you know the cultists are definitely the bad guys, but they sure don't feel like it. Its disorienting and troubling, just like a difficult psychedelic trip.

I really love cinema, and I have an open mind with every film I see. But at the end of the day a film needs to leave you feeling overwhelmed; either with excitement, happiness, sadness etc. But this film feels so pretentious and boring I really can't fathom how people have called it a masterpiece. Perhaps I just don't get it.

Why is Christian attractive and unattractive at the same time? his face confuses me.

I also noticed at the beginning of the movie when Dani was laying on either the couch or her bed that there was a huge painting of a bear above her. I just thought that was crazy since her boyfriend was put into a bear at the end.

I liked the alternate ending where it turns out her boyfriend had a brother high up in the military and hearing about the disappearances uses satellite imagery to discover what happened and then sends a stealth Apache helicopter drone and scorches the earth of the entire commune leaving nothing left and killing everyone. I mean everyone. Then he quips, Ragnarock bitches and the Swedes pay no mind because they are such a progressive folk. The End.

I cant help loving this scene cuz its really beautiful. they look fun and the music is so cool and the dance performance is great.
You guys need to watch this movie again in DirectorCut, there is extra 30 mins.
Anyone familiar with Latin American history will quickly recognize the cult in Midsommar as a clear homage to Colonia Dignidad, a cult founded by former Nazis in Chile. And yes, it WAS more horrifying than this horror movie.
This is the best review of any movie ever. Returning back after a year because of how good it is.

I never would have thought a movie that had full frontal nudity, group sex, hallucinogenic drug use, various forms of suicide, kidnappings, and body mutilation could be absurdly BORING! Then I saw Midsommar. Thank goodness, I was introduced to Florence Pough in Fighting With My Family, earlier in the year. I would have hated her if Midsommar was my first time encountering the young woman. She isn't the worst part of Midsommar, but that film didn't do her any favors.

I cant believe you see the boyfriend as shitty here especially when you say its his fault he ends up being burned alive when she decided to do so after she thought he cheated on her WHEN THE DUDE WAS PUT UNDER THE INFLUENCE AND RAPED AGAINST HIS WILL! This shows the cult dont actually care about anyone-they care about their beliefs and agenda-manipulating a person to get the response out of the protagonist that they wanted MAKING HER VICTIM BLAME HER BOYFRIEND FOR BEING MANIPULATED ALL THE SAME! They make the boyfriend pay the price cause they wanted her to get rid of anyone they didnt deem worthy. The last part of this film scared me and pissed me off-scared me to think i could be raped and then have no say for my defence and be killed for the sake of a cults selfish desires-what pisses me off is people forgetting about him being raped OR EVEN BEING OK WITH IT. I guaran-fucking-tee you-switch the roles of boyfriend and girlfriend and everybody would bash this film for victim blaming a woman being drugged and raped for the sake of a man getting closure-yet the girl here is applauded for freeing herself of a man THAT WASNT WILLINGLY CHEATING ON HER.

Midsommer had excellent cinematography, a droning story and terrible acting/script. I would agree with the mid 70 ratings based on the effects and effort put into controlling the viewers perspective and interpreting mental states via camera work. If all of that was removed however, we would be left with the droning story and terrible acting. Worth a watch for anyone who likes art films or is interested in cinematography.
This movie will definitely leave you hanging and make you feel like you're on a trip. This film is not for everyone especially if you easily get bored and for some it really requires a second viewing to grasp the meaning of this film.
