One day Goreng wakes up with his future colleague Trimagasi in the 33rd level of a prison style place, crossed by a hole where a platform descends with meal remains left from the tenants from higher levels. Trimagasi knows the rules that govern this mysterious place: two people per level and an unknown number of them. If you go upwards you survive... but think too much and you will descend again. If you are in the bottom where the food barely arrives, you cannot trust anyone except your guts.

El final de la película es el chef retando a sus cocineros porque la panacotta llegó a ellos con un pelo. Es decir, la panacotta, finalmente, fue el mensaje, la niña funciona como una alegoría a la vida justo cuando los dos hombres llegan al final de todo, sin fuerzas, casi sin vida, alucinando y dejándonos alucinar a nosotros. Sabiendo que el protagonista y el ayudante son una alegoría al Quijote y Sancho, ambos unidos para combatir un poco lo ajetreado del sistema. Me encantó la película y los guiños simbólicos de la sociedad decadente y con gente de mierda con la que nos rodeamos.

People should take this seriously, it just seems like shes swallowing things to cope with her pain... just like alcohol, drugs, working out to much etc... anyways its nice to see a movie that isnt a sequel and can somewhat inform or make people want to expand their knowledge in mental health.

Llevas razón pero Netflix no tenía esa intención. Más bien la intención es la contraria y han conseguido que el vulgo compre el relato izquierdista.
The Spanish-language début feature from director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia is a satirical-sci-fi-cum-horror-drama that strains to make social-commentating points about capitalism and classism amid toilet jokes and cannibalistic threats.
Reminiscent of similarly nearly-one-set minimalist dramas like Cube, it begins well, flounders about, throws hefty themes in our faces and finally doesn’t know where to go, winding up in a baffling fashion guaranteed to annoy almost everyone.
Goreng (Iván Massagué) awakens on Level 48 of a prison and meets his cellmate, the older, creepier Trimagasi (Zorion Eguileor). This is no typical correctional facility though: the place is part of a tower of apparently gigantic size, and every day a platform is lowered through a hole in the centre of the room upon which the remains of a huge gourmet meal are temporarily placed. Trimagasi gorges himself upon the soiled scraps but Goreng refuses at first, and it immediately becomes clear that this is going to be a blatantly symbolic tale, with the worst offenders starving and murdering each other as we go further down, occasional suicides tumbling past and a freaky young woman (Alexandra Masangkay) sometimes riding the platform so she can help out when the narrative turns nasty.
After his time on 48, Goreng finds himself on Level 33 with Imoguiri (Antonia San Juan), an employee of “The Administration” who euphemistically refers to “The Pit” or “The Hole” as “a vertical self-management centre” (! ), and tries hard not to see what a horrendous place she’s been sending people to over so many years. Ugly plot tricks kick in, and eventually Baharat (Emilio Buale Coka) appears with a rope and lots of lofty leftie ideals, all of which are shown to be pretty bloody hopeless.
Impressively produced on what must have been a low budget and with strong work from Massagué, this offers everything from knife fights and a little light flesh-eating, to heavy-duty political allegorising and projectile bowel evacuations. Some out there will naturally celebrate its thematic grandstanding, but no one could possibly be happy with that final few minutes.

W hen Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia began shooting his latest film in Bilbao almost two years ago, the Spanish director felt the themes of his low-budget, dystopian horror feature would be sufficiently universal to resonate with audiences around the world. Today, however, many are claiming that El Hoyo – known in English as The Platform – is the perfect parable for life in the time of the coronavirus and a visceral investigation of how a crisis can expose not only the stratification of human society but also the immutable strands of selfishness coded into our DNA.
The parallels are certainly not hard to find. The Platform is set in a forbidding “vertical self-management centre” – a soaring series of concrete cells stacked one on top of the other, each holding two inmates. Every day, the eponymous platform, stacked with a lavish but finite supply of food and drink, descends, level by level.
Those on each floor are free to decide how much they eat and how much they leave for those on the hundreds of levels beneath them. If they gorge themselves, they will starve those below; if they try to hoard food, the temperature in their cell will rise or fall fatally.
While Gaztelu-Urrutia is delighted by the film’s growing audience on Netflix, he is as surprised by its freshly minted relevance as anyone else. “It’s an allegory about the distribution of wealth, which is a universal debate and a debate that’s been going on for as long as people have been around, ” he told the Guardian.

“But I remember when we were showing it at a film festival in Toronto last year, people were saying, ‘Shit! Historically speaking, this is the ideal moment to be showing a film like this because the differences between those who have the most and those who have the least have never been as great as they are now. ’ And I’d say, ‘Well actually it’s always the perfect time to be screening a film like The Platform because we’ve always been living through at a time when these differences are so stark. ’”
But the director, who describes himself as “basically very pessimistic about us as a species”, acknowledges that the pandemic and the film’s presence on one of the world’s largest streaming platforms have given the movie a new lease of life. “With the new showing on Netflix, it’s suddenly become very topical again because of the current situation, ” he said. “If, instead of putting food on the platform, we’d made it face masks or toilet paper or ventilators, we’d be having exactly the same debate. ”
The other week, added Gaztelu-Urrutia, he was listening to Andrew Cuomo, the governor of New York, lament that US states were engaged in a bidding war for ventilators. “That’s exactly what happens in The Platform, ” he said.

“When things take a turn for the worse and we get squeezed a bit, we become very, very selfish and start stockpiling everything we can, just in case. We don’t realise that that kind of greed means a lot of other people have to go without. ”
Although Gaztelu-Urrutia stresses that the film – which began life as a theatre piece – contains instantly recognisable universal themes, it doesn’t hide its Spanish roots. If there are occasional echoes of films such as High Rise, and The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover, there are also pointed nods to Luis Buñuel’s The Exterminating Angel. A copy of Don Quixote features heavily, as do the issues of imprisonment and free will explored in Pedro Calderón de la Barca’s seminal Golden Age play Life is a Dream.
At its heart, though, it is a film with an uncomfortable message. “The point of The Platform is that it isn’t about a war between those above and those below – we all have someone above us and someone below us, ” he said.
It’s all very well, Gaztelu-Urrutia added, to demand action from the politicians and multibillionaires so many floors above, but their response – or lack of it – cannot be used to absolve us of individual responsibility. “You can look above you and think that the people up there should be doing much more, but then you look down and see there are many levels below yours, ” he said. “The question is: what am I going to do from where I am to fight this selfish structure that runs throughout our society and species? ”.
