<<鬼剣舞（おにけんばい）>>

念仏風流系の民俗芸能で、岩手県中南部に集中的に伝承されています。その由来は、大宝年間（西暦701～704年）、役（えん）の行者が念仏を広めるために踊ったものが始まりとも、あるいは羽黒山の修験者（＝山伏）が悪魔退散、衆生済度の念仏踊りとして踊ったものが始まりとも言われております。鬼面をつけ、毛采（けざい）をかぶり、腰には大口袴、鎖帷子（くさりかたびら）・手甲（てっこう）・襷（たすき）がけといった異様ないでたちで激しい所作を展開するこの民俗芸能は、現代人の心を強くゆさぶります。

Oni Kenbai (Demon Sword Dance)

This folk dance originates from the Nembutsu school of elegance and has been passed down through the ages in a localized area of south-central Iwate Prefecture.The dance is said to have started with En No Ozume, founder of the Shugendo Esoteric sect of Buddhism, who performed the dance to encourage the practice of Nembutsu (chanting the name of Buddha as a means of achieving salvation). Another theory has it that the Oni Kenbai was created by a Buddhist priest living on Mt.Haguro. The dance gained great popularity as a way to drive out demons by invoking the Buddha's name. Clad in fantastic attire such as devil masks, headdresses, wide hakama skirts, long swords, chain chest plate, hand guards, and tucked up sleeves, the performers make this dance a spectacle that powerfully jolts the senses of the modern viewer.
