But the top does continue to spin.
The beauty of the movie is that the audience is left with their own interpretations on the fate of the characters. Because the top continues to spin, one may assume he is still in the dream, which may lead them to find the astonishing ending as sad seeing that he is doomed in the dream space missing out on the lives of his children. One may view Leonardo being stuck in the dream as a happy ending because throughout the rest of the film he avoided his responsibilities to his family and job to find his deceased wife in dark areas of his mind. This perspective of ending would allow Dicaprio to be with not only his children, but his wife. I don't like most of that idea because he finally was able to let go of her and a happier version may be the other option the viewers may experience which is one in which he escaped the dream. The film comes to an end with the top spinning, however it does begin to wobble and may appear to some as beginning to fall. With this view, Leonardo has conquered his darkest fears and the crew accomplished their mission and can live his life free from worry with money and what was left of his family. However, with the knowledge that Christopher Nolan is quite a dark and mysterious man it is apparent that he wanted the audience to interact with the film and for them to decide whether they wanted the ending to be melancholiac or euphoric as a sort of emotional experiment. The audience was meant to be left not with the question of whether the top falls or not but how do their lives and depictions of the film change the fates and storyline of Inception. Inception itself is defined as a starting point, perhaps a starting point in knowing the furthest reaches of the human mind, not that of DiCaprio's character but of the audience members. The film is tragic and breathtaking and one must take it for what it is.
