It is one of three types of gold, silver, and copper coins issued to commemorate the 60th year of the reign of Emperor Showa (1901~1989).

This coin was issued to commemorate the 50th year of the reign of Emperor Showa (1901~1989).
Emperor Showa was an emperor who reigned during the Showa period (1926~1989).
His real name is Hirohito. He was the emperor who experienced World War II during his reign, and is the longest-reigning emperor in Japan among those recorded.

The obverse side of the coin is engraved with the words "Japan" and "500 yen", and the Imperial Palace is depicted.
The Imperial Palace is the residence of the Emperor (Imperial Palace), and the current Imperial Palace is a reuse of Edo Castle, the castle of the shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate in the Edo period, from the Meiji era.
Therefore, it can be said that it is both a castle and a palace.
What is depicted in the picture is a building called the ”Fushimi Yagura”, which is part of the Imperial Palace, which doubles as an armory and a lookout tower. The bridge in front of it is a stone bridge made of granite that spans from the main gate, and was built in the Meiji era (1889).
The Imperial Palace is now famous as a tourist attraction, but the Fushimi Yagura and the stone bridge at the main gate are especially popular.

The reverse side of the coin depicts the year name, the words "50 years on the throne" and "100 yen", as well as a phoenix and a chrysanthemum crest, which is the family crest of the imperial family.
The phoenix expresses that it is a celebratory event and a blessing.
The chrysanthemum crest of the imperial family is called "juroku-yaegiku" and is a design of a double chrysanthemum with 16 petals.
