These gassesare highly toxic and can cause physical harm. Strong smells and/or irritation of youreyes, nose or throat are signs that you are in danger. Find shelter or leave the areaimmediately.Owakudani has an altitude of 1,040m.There are many foggy days, and even duringthe summer, cloudy or rainy days are chilly, so long sleeves and rain apparel arenecessary. Also, since there are often days with strong winds, it is recommended tobring winter clothes or extra layers of clothing.OwakudaniOwakudani (“The Great Boiling Valley”) was formed approximately 3,000 years agoas a result of the eruption and subsequent collapse of Kamiyama Mountain (altitude:1,438 m). To this day there are still volcanic fumes of hydrogen sulfide beingemitted. As a result, timber has wilted and rocks have turned to clay, exposing abronze-colored hillside.
