The playing techniques of Tsugaru-shamisen have not been completely established. Such techniques as kyojaku, in which loud and soft strokes are alternated, and the use of bachi (plectrum), depends a great deal on each player’s sense. Nitabo, who is said to be the pioneer of the shamisen playing techniques, once said ‘you should not copy somebody else’s style but play the instrument in your own style’. This instruction is still strongly supported among shamisen players, which hinders, for better or worse, the complete establishment of the playing styles of Tsugaru-shamisen.
