Another thing I picked up on in this movie, in relation to how cults operate, is how utterly alone Dani is within American society. She clearly isn't a very social person, is struggling with mental health issues even before her sister's horrific act, and is left clinging like a drowning person to someone she no longer loves, and who no longer loves her (at least, that's what I got from a pivotal scene in the Director's cut. She literally has no one to turn to and no one looking out for her. Late capitalist American society has nothing to offer people in her situation. It's all buck up kid, deal with it. You're on your own. Which is no answer at all. But hyper individualism our social-Darwinist view of the world cannot, by definition, offer her anything. That's why communal cults, like Peoples Temple of Jonestown fame, were and are filled with people who were otherwise lost and adrift, but have now been given (meaningless, artificial) purpose by the cult in question.

I lost my sister two years ago. This movie broke me into pieces, and then put me back together. I couldn't turn away, and I almost couldn't watch. A masterpiece.

I personally enjoyed the film a lot but I think the ending is way darker than what some people think. Dani ended up being a part of the cult, brainwashed and manipulated. That is extremely messed up and is way more fearful than your usual jump scares since this is something very real and can happen to anyone who is emotionally vulnerable.
I loved it, especially as it stays with in the weeks after watching. Really regret bringing my best friends to see it bc they were not on the same page and brought the energy down in the viewing for me. Definitely a film I recommend seeing alone or with another dedicated cinephile.

Loved your review, even though I enjoyed the movie myself. One thing I want to dispute, however, is whether the movie acts as if Christian deserved his fate. The horror of the movie is that it indoctrinates the audience the same way the cult indoctrinates Dani. Nobody's death was deserved, but it makes the audience feel as though they were, or at least kind of gloss over and forget about them in the cathartic spectacle. By the end, Dani's need to feel emotionally validated and belong was exploited until they had her, and she became one of the monsters. She was not freed, she was trapped, but we are brainwashed along with her into feeling like she was.

After watching it yesterday I noticed that when everyone arrived to the main grounds of the whole place, there was a man greeting everyone saying welcome but he skips over Dani, saves her for last and clearly says to her welcome home 😳😳.

Slow moving! No suspense at all. You know what was going to happen. It was not scary, it was not gross, it was not intense, it was not a thriller, so what was it?
