J・S・ミル

ミルの人生のあれこれはあまりに有名すぎる――全部有名な『ミル自伝』 (1873) に書いてある――のでここで繰り返すまでもないから、ざっと流すだけにしよう。リカード派経済学者ジェイムズ・ミルの息子、初期から天才として教育を受け、父親によって効用主義哲学者ジェレミー・ベンサムに「貸し出され」自分も効用主義者になり、父親にしたがってイギリス東インド会社に入り、ベンサムと決別し、実存の危機を迎え、サン＝シモンとコントの哲学と出会い、ハリエット・テイラーに出会って彼女の夫が死ぬまで 20 年間待ち続け、ホイッグ党政治家になり云々云々。 　J.S. ミルは経済学者で、それも古典派経済学者で、1848 年の リカード理論の再構成はあまりに決定的と思われたので、価格理論の議論の冒頭でかれは自信たっぷりにこう述べている: 「ありがたいことに、価値の法則の中には、現在・未来の著述家が明確化すべきものは何一つ残っていない。この問題の理論は完成した。乗り越えるべき唯一の困難は、そう述べることによって、それを適用する際に生じる主な困惑が予測によって解決されてしまうかもしれないということだ」 (J.S.
