- Daniel LaRusso has just moved from New Jersey to Reseda, CA (a neighborhood in Los Angeles) and is finding it hard to acclimatise to life in the new city. He is promised a swimming pool and a beautiful house, but when they get there, its anything but nice. He meets a beautiful blond girl, but encounters a gang of bullies who make his life a living hell. This further dampens Daniels spirit as he just wants to go home. He is continually bullied and is afraid to show his face around the high school. He then meets mentor/handyman Mr. Miyagi who takes the naive Daniel under his wing and shows him that Karate and life arent all about power and strength. Its something deep within youre soul that makes you what you are. Daniel is the underdog and faces the biggest challenge of his life. WIN and he can rejoice forever knowing he beat the bullies. LOSE? Theyll never let him forget it!!

Definately one of the best films of the 80's. I am 22, and remember seeing this movie when i was like 6. I didn't fully understand many of the subplots working along with the karate. Now, in my older days, i watch this film and realize what a true masterpiece it really is. Without a doubt, this is the best of the trilogy, because i do not even count "the next karate kid" as part of the trilogy. Macchio, Morita, Shue, Zabka, Cove, Heller, and the rest of the Kobra Kae's really made this movie interesting and fun. It spawned three sequels, plus video games for all the game systems of the 80s. I actually watched this film today, and I was thrilled once again. No matter how many times i watch it, the plot never gets old, and the story is always fresh and exciting. I also took notice of Chad Mcqueen's performance of Dutch, and definately give him props for the role of the second best bad guy in the film. So if your in the mood for an 80s cult classic, Choose Daniel and Miyagi.

The Karate Kid is a film to be enjoyed for decades to come. Basically it's an entry-level film into the eastern world for the developing class of younger people. Karate Kid combines the aspiration of an immature American child and the discipline of eastern martial arts and philosophy.
Through common struggles of a teenager we see balance found through the influence of mind. This is what makes this movie timeless. The conquering of the soul and mind.
I hope that forever we can appreciate the righteous effect Karate Kid has on American and foreign youth.

All this film tries to indoctrinate into people, is that Johnny is evil because he is a winner and wants to succeed, they argue that Daniel is good because he's the discriminated one who doesn't understand the 'evil' Americana ethics. This film is inherently liberal in essence, on a deeper level, it suggests that America must be destroyed so they don't win, because remember 'winners are the real losers' mentality. And any effort America makes to stop their own demise, is bigoted and down right evil.
