芝生化奮闘記

現在、イングランドで行われているFAカップ（125年の歴史を誇るサッカーの勝ち抜き大会）の3回戦で、世界トップクラスのマンチェスターユナイテッドと対戦したバーとン・アルビオンと言うチームの話をしたいです。

このチームがイングランドサッカーの中でプレミアーシップ、チャンピオンシップ、リーグ1、リーグ2の次の位置するコンフェレンスに所属していて、プロ選手ではないです。現在このリーグでは22チーム中14位と頑張っているバートン・アルビオンとプレミアーシップで2位に付けているマンチェスターユナイテッドとの間に113チームがあります。

バートンのホームグラウンドで行われた試合を見て感じたことが底辺で活躍しているクラブチームのグラウンドの芝生の状態の悪さです。禿げている場所がけっこうあり、選手が走る時に芝生が飛ぶ場面も多く見られ、イレギュラーが多く、決してやりやすい芝生ではないです。サッカー協会が良くもこんなひどい芝生でプレイをさせるなと思い、腹が立って来ました。

その時気付いたのですが、やはり僕は日本の芝生病に感染しかかっているのです。日本では全ての芝生が完璧でなければいけないというのが常識であり、完璧を提供できない時は土に戻した方が良いと言う病気が流行していて、僕もこの病気にかかったのかと思いました。

治療の為、我がグリーンフィールドにすぐ行きました。そうすると、芝生も決して状態が完璧ではないが、近所の中学生が笑顔いっぱいで遊んでいた姿を見て、底辺では底辺の芝生でいいんだと世界の常識（日本の非常識）を思い出し、安心して家に帰りました。

I would like to chat about Burton Albion, a conference league soccer team in England who on Sunday played world-famous Manchester United in the 3rd round of the FA Cup.

Burton Albion currently lie 14th out of 22 teams in the Nationwide Conference, below the Premiership, Championship, League 1, and League 2. There are a whole 113 teams between them and Manchester United, currently 2nd in the Premiership.

Watching the match being played at the Burton home ground, I found it difficult to accept the poor state of the grass. There were plenty of bare patches, turf flew from the players’ boots, and many times the ball bounced in an entirely irregular fashion. I was becoming angry with the Football Assn for forcing the players to play on such substandard a surface.

Then I realized that I was on the verge of coming down with the Japanese turf disease. Here, sports turf is expected to be perfect at all levels, with dirt preferred when perfect turf can not be provided.

Knowing I needed immediate treatment, I rushed to Greenfield. The turf there is far from perfect, and when I saw a local school kid playing with a huge smile on his face, I suddenly came to my senses: at the local club level, far-from-perfect grass is completely acceptable. Cured of the Japanese turf disease, I returned home to prepare dinner.
