芝生化奮闘記

あまり日本のラグビーのファンではないのでどうしてだかよくわからないけど昨日は日本ラグビートップリーグの試合中継を見ていました。面白いことを発見できました。解説者から土のグラウンドの欠点を裏付ける発言が出ました。でも解説者決してそのつもりで言っていないはずです。

「日本の選手が小刻みに走るよね、外人のような大きなストライドではない」。

遺伝でこうなった訳ではないでしょうから、原因を考えてみましょう。

保育園、幼稚園、校と言うなが付く施設（小中高大）、公園、多くの公立運動公園のほとんどが土で育った国民です。幼い頃からは転べば痛い（出血も多い）環境では走ることを含めて動くときはごく自然に転ばない動きになります。走っている時は精一杯走って入るものの、転ばない最高のスピードでしか走らないのが癖になってきています。小刻みなステップの方がバランスが崩れにくいので、スポーツ選手になった時は既にこんな走り方が身体の一部になっています。

芝生の上で育った人間なら、転んで怪我をする恐怖心がないので、本当に精一杯走ります。歩幅だけでななくて、気持ちも一緒に大きくなります。

Not sure why, as I am not a great fan of Japanese rugby, but yesterday I was watching a replay of a Top League (Japanese domestic competition) rugby match. I am glad I did, as I made an interesting discovery. The commentator--probably totally unaware of what he had actually said--made a comment that encapsulated the main problem with dirt grounds.

"Unlike foreigners, Japanese players take small and precise steps when running".

I am sure this is not due to genetics, so I thought about the possible reasons.

From a very young age, Japanese people grow up with dirt playing areas, from play school, kindergarten, primary, junior high, high school, university, local parks, most playing fields. One of the first lessons they learn is that falling over hurts, often causing bleeding, so when they start to run, they learn instinctively to run at the maximum speed at which they can maintain their balance and in a manner that lessens the likelihood of falling. Thus the small precise steps.

Whereas people in normal countries who grow up playing on grass do not have this fear of falling and run at their absolute maximum speed, with long strides. They display a real zest for activity not seen in Japanese kids.
