芝生化奮闘記

昨日は我々のラグビークラブが横浜のYC&ACで試合をしました。まずはさんぼさんと彼の仲間、航勇さんと彼の仲間、後僕の東京の友人数人の助っ人の方々にお礼を言います。本当に有り難うございました。試合には負けましたが試合を通じてとても大事につながりが出来て、改めてラグビーの素晴らしさを実感した一日でした。

危機はこれではないです。

危機は試合会場となったYC&ACがクラブの中心となっている百年以上守り続けて来た天然芝生のグラウンドを利用が激しくて、いい状態に保つのはもう無理だとの理由で人工芝にすることを数週間以内に決定するそうです。

ここは単なる一つのスポーツクラブではないです。このクラブは芝生スポーツの代名詞とでも言うべきサッカーとラグビーを日本の導入したクラブでもあり、天然芝生の良さを百年も前から何万人の日本人に味わう機会を与え続けてクラブでもあります。

まだまだ維持管理の面で打てる手があるうちは僕はあらゆる手を使って、時分の体を張ってでも人工芝導入を阻止したいと思っています。

今は勝負のときです。

This weekend, our rugby club paid its annual visit to Yokohama to play the YC&AC Gents. I would like to offer my heart-felt thanks to the many rugby friends who turned up to help us field a full team. Although we lost the match, we all were able to build some close ties with our team mates, reconfirming the best feature of rugby as a sport.

However, this is not the crisis to which I refer in the title.

The crisis is thatYC&AC is on the verge of deciding to replace the natural grass field it has protected for over 100 years, to artificial turf because of the difficulties of maintaining the grass in a decent state as a result of the intensive use.

YC&AC is no ordinary sports club. In existence since 1868, the first year of the Meiji Era, YC&AC introduced the two main outdoor grass sports of rugby and soccer to Japan and has helped tens of thousands of Japanese players enjoy the benefits of playing on natural grass for over one hundred years.

As long as there are still some unexplored areas with regard to maintaining the grass turf, I will take all possible measures within my power to stop the introduction of artificial turf at YC&AC.

It is time for action.
