芝生化奮闘記

去年芝生化した隣の県のある小学校の校庭の野球少年と校庭がまだ土の近くの小学校の野球チームが今まで接戦を繰り返していたそうです。

でも、今年の試合は違っていたという報告が昨日入りました。

今年は芝生化した校庭の学校に着いて、試合前の練習をしていた土の少年が｢相手が凄く大きく見えるんだ。僕らはとても勝てそうに無い｣と監督に言ったそうです。大きくは無いけど、大きく見える。矛盾しているようですが、決して矛盾していないです。

芝生で毎日遊んだり、練習したりしている少年の動き怪我の心配がない分、大きくなり、スケールが大きくなっているのです。思いっきり良くダイビングキャッチしたり、ごろを止めたりするので、相手には威圧にすら感じるのです。

案の定、芝生化少年の圧勝に終わった。それまで芝生化に反対していた小学校のPTA会長が来年の学校芝生化の相談をしにその翌日我々のところを訪れました。

一ヶ所、また一ヶ所と着実に進展をしています。
The annual baseball matches between a primary school whose ground we helped convert to grass last year and a nearby primary school whose grounds are still dirt are usually very closely fought.

But this year, the result was totally different.

This year, the players from the dirt grounds, soon after starting the pre-match warm-up at the grass grounds of the opponents' school, turned to their coach and said "the other kids look really big. We don't reckon we will be able to win today". It seems a contradiction to say that they seem bigger when in fact the physiques were about the same but it is not a contradiction at all.

The kids who play and train on grass, freed from the fear of injury, make more dynamic movements and gestures, diving at full-length to catch fly balls or stop grounders. The dynamism of their movements exerts pressure on the opponents.

Much as expected, the kids from the grassed school won by a large margin. The very next day, the PTA chairman of the other school, who had opposed grass consistently up to then, visited me the next day to ask for our help in converting the grounds at his school to grass.

And so we move forward, one place at a time.
