Thought it was happy? The cult was a CULT. I always thought of the film as someone going from one abusive home to another. Also I totally connected the movie to fascism because it looks a whole lot like Rodnovery, which is a modern pagan movement that explicitly is based around white nationalism.

Midsommar wasn't much of a horror movie is such an unbelievable take to me. it's the most horrifying movie i've ever seen in my life. i've never been as unsettled, uncomfortable, and dreading every single second as it dragged on in a perpetual state of building tension, as i have while watching this movie. when i was done watching it, i wanted to puke. her smile at the end made my stomach twist in disgust. i've never reacted like that to any movie. maybe it's just a me thing, maybe the movie managed to get uniquely under my skin in a way that most people didn't experience, but i can't ever watch it again. it was a harrowing experience. it's probably the only horror movie i've ever watched that literally horrified me. (i have not seen hereditary and now i think i probably never will) your analysis basically saying that the people of the death cult were fascists? yeah. now i'm ready to barf.

I feel that midsommar is deeply horrifying, to me it represents the dangers of looking at another culture or subculture uncritically to the point where you assimilate into a community that contradicts your own values, just because it seems idyllic on the surface. Not to say that you shouldn't respect and value other cultures, but ompletely romanticising and idealising another country without understanding it is not respectful in my opinion. It's also about falling prey to toxic people who take advantage of your vulnerable mental state, the film's characters were charmed by a performative friendliness I've experienced for myself.

Straight up its the most messed up movie ive ever seen. I did not enjoy watching it. I didn't think it was a bad movie, the acting was incredible but everything in it was disturbing from start to finish. i'm glad i saw it but i'm pretty confident i'll never watch it again.

Unbeknownst to Dani, Christian and his three friends have planned a summer trip to Sweden and when tragedy strikes her family, Christian reluctantly invites her to join. Upon arrival, the crew begins their journey in the most acclimatizing manner possible: by taking hallucinogenics! It is the most realistic portrayal of what it's like to be on drugs that I've ever seen on film. This initiation sets the tone for what will become an increasingly trippy affair. The commune's pastoral setting is quaint and the people welcoming, albeit unusual. The Harga, an isolated pagan community, are clad in white floral smocks, each uniquely embroidered. The stunning outbuildings are out of a fairytale, painted and wallpapered in dalamalning style. The visitors are treated to a formal dinner, but when the post meal walk leads to the Ättestupa, a ritual diving platform where elder members of the tribe perform senicide, we get the sense that not everything is as enchanting as the surroundings. The stakes only escalate from there. Let me tell you one last thing: no, you can't ignore the bear.

Watched this movie when I was stoned, one of the craziest experiences of my life, it had a completely different vibe to it. I cant explain.

I think this video explained why I found Midsommar more unsettling than Hereditary. I found the ending similarly complicated as Dogville; you find it cathartic to see but you wonder if those people actually deserved the punishment they received and the fact that the Harga manipulates people just like how real cults work is. humans are still more frightening than monsters.

I just noticed that her smile at the end resembles the smile on the sun in the “painting” that is shown at the VERY beginning of the film.

For real, i barely ever like new horror movies, Midsommar was stuck in my head for weeks. A master piece and i hope the future of horror, or as the director would call it, A break up movie.
