〜 全米第4位になった動物園 〜

オアフ島ワイキキにカピオラニ公園ができたのが1800年代後半のこと。市民に楽しんでもらおうと徐々に動物が増えていき、その後、公園の一部がホノルル動物園になりました。

そんな歴史あるこの場所が、アメリカの新聞 USA Todayの「読者が選ぶ全米動物園ベスト10」で第4位に!!

規模は小さいですが見せ方も工夫されていて、大人も子供も楽しめる場所。閉園後の夕方に入場できる「トワイライトツアー」は人気のアトラクション。また園内にいる動物の里親になれる制度もあるとか。

The Honolulu Zoo has been voted as the 4th best zoo in the country in the prestigious 2024 USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards, an amazing accomplishment made possible through the enthusiastic support of loyal and dedicated zoo supporters including residents and visitors, the Honolulu City Council, the entire team of City employees across all departments, and the zoo’s support organizations - the Honolulu Zoo Society and SSA Group.

“We extend a huge and heartfelt mahalo to the people of Hawaiʻi and zoo supporters around the world for their tremendous outpouring of aloha for our beloved Honolulu Zoo,” said Mayor Rick Blangiardi. “This wonderful accomplishment was made possible by the outstanding Honolulu Zoo Director Linda Santos and her hard-working and devoted crew. They are thoroughly dedicated to providing the best care for the animals and sharing the importance of conservation with all of our cherished visitors. The zoo team’s committment to their mission is reflected in the results of this contest.”

A panel of industry experts and editors selected Honolulu as one of America’s top 20 zoos to be in the running for the “Best Zoo” in the country. A public voting period of 28 days from February 5, 2024 to March 4, 2024 determined which zoos made it into the top ten.

The top 10 winners for the “Best Zoo” are: #1 Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium, #2 Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, #3 North Carolina Zoo, #4 Honolulu Zoo, #5 Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, #6 Brevard Zoo, #7 Audubon Zoo, #8 San Diego Zoo, #9 Saint Louis Zoo, and #10 ZooMontana.
