I confess that I became a big fan of the director when I watched Hereditary and was very anxious to know what his next job would be.
I put a lot of expectation on your new movie and I can say that it did not disappoint me.
Ari Aster handed me a movie that deals, between the lines, the relationship is worn out.
I like the beginning of the movie, because it uses time well to establish the relationship of the characters, both the main and the supporting.
The movie is also in no hurry to start acting like a thriller and horror.
The scenes that claim to be shocking take time to happen, but when they happen it is chilling.
While in Hereditary the dark environment prevails, here in Midsommar we have daylight remaining for much of the film.
For thinking that in horror movies bad things happen only at night, in this movie, it doesn't matter if it's clear.
Things happen the same way and have the same impact if it were overnight.
I loved the final scene and found it a bit like the Hereditary ending.
The triangular geometric form appears again here and the symbology it may have is quite understandable.
An ending that may not be seen as a happy ending, but in the eyes of the protagonist, is a perfect ending.
Definitely loved this movie. Such a breath of fresh air from all the regurgitated stories and remakes in theaters.

Within mainstream, patriarchal American culture, we're conditioned through birth to accept and normalize helplessness in women and accept inherent male dominance and aggression. In the Role-playing game, Delta Green, an aspect of sanity is an adaptation to helplessness/violence (we might call this an internalization or conditioning.) I find this configuration useful for understanding how women are more susceptible to cults while Men are more susceptible to aggressive hate groups as it becomes normalized over time. Both kinds of groups rely on alienation and insecurity which compound on one another until addressed or expressed.

Watched this movie with my then boyfriend and I sat through it silently and didnt speak till I got home because how I felt resonated a lot with how Dani felt, and how I thought my ex was a lot like broke up a couple days later.
We actually get to see Dani smile for once ever since her family's death which is why I love this scene.
My takeaway from this summary: Don't piss on the ancestral tree bruh.
This movie inspired me on a visual level. i love stories like this where its totally realistic but also 100% fairytale-ish.

I loved Hereditary and Midsommar was SUCH a great follow up. Another instant classic by Ari Aster, his films are fresh and TERRIFYING.
Watched this movie when I was stoned, one of the craziest experiences of my life, it had a completely different vibe to it. I cant explain.

This film takes the viewer through some scenes with highly complicated instances of emotional expression. I didn't really know how to take the group moaning seriously at first but it later occured to me how resonant that would make those experiences which were being shown. Dani was offered an emotional breakthrough from the way the cultists helped her deal with her feelings. She needed that level of exertion, she had snapped. Furthermore, Christians disoriented infidelity is what provided Dani the chance to snap which lead to the cultists helping her exercise away her damaging emotions. I think this wailing scene also works to set up Dani to be portrayed as having emotionally transcended to the point where she is willing to let Christian die; she found the support she needed from Christian from the female cult members instead and so she feels no remorse in letting him die. He ultimately failed to help her directly of his own accord so karma worked to have him betray her badly enough to where she would snap and the cult would help her heal, leaving her only with feelings of resentment towards Christian and an invaluable feeling of gratitude towards the cult members that is strong enough to over rule that fact that they are all insane killers that killed everyone she came there with and even kill their own in ritualistic practice. The emotional logic of this story operates on a genius level that most people won't quickly associate with, but that doesn't make it nonsense.
Midsommar absolutely left me in a dark hole for a few days. I felt incredibly exposed and raw after watching it.
I'm just realizing now that the person who was putting the ridiculous amount of nuts in the cake was probably someone in the cult.

I think that this analysis maps pretty closely onto the real-life fascist recruiting of white women. We so often discuss fascism in relation to men, that we lose sight of the real appeal it can have to women. If the left cant identify and combat that appeal, we lose half the battle against fascism as an ideology. Fascism doesnt offer women personal and political power like it does to men, it offers us what the cult in Midsommar offers Dani: a clearly defined, gendered role in society, where you only have to worry about your home, children, and husband. And that role is deeply appealing to many people: it just also comes with guaranteed sexual violence and suppression of womens political and personal power.
