Vito Corleone is the aging don (head) of the Corleone Mafia Family. His youngest son Michael has returned from WWII just in time to see the wedding of Connie Corleone (Michaels sister) to Carlo Rizzi. All of Michaels family is involved with the Mafia, but Michael just wants to live a normal life. Drug dealer Virgil Sollozzo is looking for Mafia families to offer him protection in exchange for a profit of the drug money. He approaches Don Corleone about it, but, much against the advice of the Dons lawyer Tom Hagen, the Don is morally against the use of drugs, and turns down the offer. This does not please Sollozzo, who has the Don shot down by some of his hit men. The Don barely survives, which leads his son Michael to begin a violent mob war against Sollozzo and tears the Corleone family apart /

Brando's performance is just amazing here. He casts a shadow over the whole movie, the whole trilogy. Not to hyperbole, but I think it's pretty safe to assume the movie wouldn't reach the legendary status it has without him. He's just perfect. He oozes charisma, presence, commands respect with very little. Dude was 47, but he acted an older man so effortlessly, so precisely. And to think he did it all without actually even knowing the lines - once in a life a time talent. That said, Godfather is a romanticized, glamorous view that criminals shouldn't receive. The movie is so iconic, so powerful in its atmosphere and imagery, it basically makes being a criminal look cool and alluring. When in real life, the top people in the mob are anything but someone like Don Corleone - they're usually aggressive thugs like Pablo Escobar (who himself is getting romanticized in movies. I think that's one thing Hollywood and filmmakers in general are guilty of - they're helping build a cult of personality for people who really don't deserve it.
