This afternoon, I saw the news about the massive earthquake near Sumatra. At first, I wondered whether my Balinese friend and his family were safe. Then, I checked yahoo Asia to get details. None of them mentioned Bali, but I was very shocked at the extensive damage. Whenever I saw TV news or read on line news, I realized how serious the damage was. Images of Phuket, the idyllic island of Phi Phi and Penang, where I'd visited and met many friendly local people, were terrible. Sad to say, even now, the number of casualties has increased. I had almost forgotten these regions lay on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" as well as Japan. I hadn't thought we would have another big earthquake in 2004.
