You may have read the term Lithium polymer on different battery-powered devices and appliances. And then there are Lithium-ion batteries as well. There is a great difference between the two. Each has its own set of pros and cons. Let's find out what a lithium polymer one has to offer.

Lithium Polymer Technology

First of all, many terms are used for this type of battery. If you look at the industry literature, you will see other terms for the product, such as prismatic or cylindrical cells. Other terms include pouch batteries.

As far as basic technology is concerned, there is a difference between the technology when it comes to these power packs. Often, the polymer is the type of electrolyte used in these units.

Today's batteries make use of a gel that allows great conductivity. Aside from this, most of these units feature a microporous separator, which is required with these units. Unlike other batteries, the difference lies in the use of separators and electrolytes.

Also, the charge and discharge rate of these cells is the same as with other regular types. Therefore, it's possible to use regular charging systems for regular items like power banks.

It's possible to use USB power sources, but the hardware takes control of the process. Typically, the same circuit can be used. For lithium polymer cells and batteries, manufacturers follow different production methods. Primary, regular lithium-ion units make use of a cylindrical cell setup or a box-type setting called prismatic cells.

Also, lithium polymer cells make use of a foil pouch format. And this is just like chewing gum. Therefore, it can be made slimmer compared to regular ones. For most manufacturers, this is quite appealing, especially if they are on the lookout for slimmer devices like phones and laptops.

Today's lithium polymer batteries have a foil-like case and high-quality laminated sheets. Therefore, these units are quite lighter. Unlike other alternatives, they are up to 20% lighter.

Also, the construction techniques allow manufacturers to make these units in a lot of shapes. This is good news for the makers of laptop computers and cell phones. They need batteries of various shapes for different types of devices.

Lithium Ion vs Lithium Polymer

If you want to go for a lithium ion battery, you can choose between a lithium ion or a regular one. Most personal or domestic applications require these batteries for the same reasons. For instance, you can find these units in power banks.

If you make cell phones, laptops or other types of similar equipment, you need to consider a lot of points, especially when making the best choice. After all, opting for the right type of power packs is quite important if you want to your appliances to work properly.

Long story short, this was a brief introduction to lithium polymer batteries. If you have never used this type of power packs, we suggest that you give them a go. We bet that you won't find anything that works better than these ones.
