I found the news that 432 babies in China now have kidney stones after being fed with contaminated baby milk powder. One baby in Gansu province has died as a result of kidney stones related to the milk powder, the official Xinhua news agency said. The suspects added water to the milk in order to make more money, then added the melamine so the diluted milk could still meet standards, the news agency reported. This news reminds me of the tragedy of arsenic-tainted milk incident caused by Morinaga.

メラミンが混入した粉ミルクを飲んで腎結石になった乳児が432人、うち一人が死亡したというニュースを見ました。メラミンを食品に入れると実際よりたんぱく質含有量が多いように検出されるため、その乳製品製造会社はミルクを水でうすめて量を増やした後、故意にメラミンを入れていたとか。赤ちゃんが飲むミルクに化学物質を入れてもうけようなんて、ひどい話ですね。経緯は違いますが、森永の砒素ミルク中毒事件を思い出しました。
