「ブラック・パールはとても速いどころか、ブラック・パールに追いつける船はない」というジャックの言葉を聞いて、「そんな船は存在しないさ」、「いや、俺は見たことがある」と言い争う海軍兵士ＡとＢです。

Ａ: There's no real ship as can match the Interceptor.
Ｂ: The Black Pearl is a real ship.
Ａ: No, it's not.
Ｂ: Yes, it is. I've seen it.
Ａ: You've seen it?
Ｂ: Yes.
Ａ: You haven’t seen it.
Ｂ: Yes, I have.

◇昨日の日記に「後ほど書きます」としたこの as。as と聞き取れたものの、文法上ここには主語の働きをする語が来るべきで、なんで前置詞がくるのよ？　と１人疑問に思っていた。
　いろいろ調べ、また人にも聞いてみたところ、この as は古い英語の使い方で「～のような」の意味の関係代名詞主格の働きをしているそう。現代英語なら関係代名詞の that になる。（関係代名詞 which でも間違いではないが、no～には that がふつうとされている。）
　また限定用法の関係詞として as をこのまま使うのなら、the same, such, as, soを伴う先行詞と連動して使われるので、there's no such ship as can match...となるのが現代英語。



どうやらブラック・パールとは、呪われた船のようです。

Ａ: You've seen a ship with black sails that's crewed by the damned and captained by a man so evil that Hell itself spat him back out?
Ｂ: No.
Ａ: No.
Ｂ: But I have seen a ship with black sails.
Ａ: Oh, and no ship that's not crewed by the damned and captained by a man so evil that Hell itself spat him back out could possibly have black sails, therefore couldn't possibly be any other ship than the Black Pearl. Is that what you're saying?
Ｂ: No.
Ａ: Like I said, there's no real ship as can match the Interceptor.

◇crew はともかく、captain が動詞で使われるのを初めて知ってビックリ。damned＝「地獄に落とされた人」

◇spit＞spat＝「～を吐き出す」。ここは「スパッティン　バックアウト」と聞こえる。

◇than は「何か言ってるぞ」程度にしか聞こえない。でも any other ときたら than と分かるべきところ。文法が弱いなあ～。


兵士たちが言い争っているうちに、ちゃっかりインターセプター号に乗り込むジャック・スパロウです。

Ａ: Hey! You! Get away from there.
Ｂ: You don't have permission to be aboard there, mate.
ジ: I'm sorry, it's just - it's such a pretty boat. Ship.
Ａ: What's your name?
ジ: Smith. Or Smithy, if you like.
Ａ: What's your purpose in Port Royal , Mr. Smith ?
Ｂ: And no lies.
ジ: Well, then, I confess. It is my intention to commandeer one of these ships, pick up a crew in Tortuga, raid, pillage, plunder and otherwise pilfer my weaselly black guts out!
Ｂ: I said no lies!
Ａ: I think he's telling the truth.
Ｂ: If he were telling the truth, he wouldn't have told us.
ジ: Unless, of course, he knew you wouldn't believe the truth even if he told it to you.

◇「港にいる許可は得ていない」ということで to be at the port かと思ったが（そう聞こえちゃったし）、なるほど、ジャックはすでに船に乗り込んでいるんだから aboard だ。

◇commandeer＝「奪い取る」、raid＝「襲撃する、急襲する」、pillage も plunder も「略奪する、強奪する」、and otherwise＝「～やその他」、pilfer＝「こそ泥する」、weaselly＝「イタチのような、こそこそした」。

ここは完敗。要約されている字幕の内容とデップの顔の表情から、何か悪しきことを言っているんだろうとはわかっても、まったく聞こえず。raid なんてハードボイルドを読んでいると使用頻度が高い語にもかかわらず、分からなかった。やっぱり目で覚えているだけでは当然聞き取れない……。

＜文法解説＞
仮主語itが指す真主語toの後に1)～6)が並列。
It is my intention to
1)commandeer one of these ships,
2)pick up a crew in Tortuga,
3)raid,
4)pillage,
5)plunder
6)and otherwise pilfer my weaselly black guts out!

最後の6)は、sweat [or slog, work] one's guts out 「汗水たらして働く」の動詞がpilferage「盗品」から派生した動詞pilferに変わった海賊英語。my weaselly black guts が目的語。weasellyはblackを修飾する副詞。1)～5)の勇ましい海賊としての活動だけでなく、6)は姑息な盗みにも精を出すということで、「…それだけじゃないぞ。いじましいこそ泥もやってやるつもりだ」ということ。（字幕ではここは要約されている。）

◇最後は「ありえない」と兵士が思っているのだから、すべて「仮定法過去」だと気づくべきところ。そうか～、高校の文法でやった仮定法はこうやって使うんだ。
