今月発行の日本ラグビー協会月刊誌「Rugby Football」に8月に行われた日本高校代表の豪州遠征の報告が載っています。その一部を引用します。

「選手一人一人の個人の巧みさ、スキルの正確さに、オーストラリアの高校代表選手との差は少しもありません。日本の高校の指導者の強化指導に間違いない確信を持ち、今後の指導の励みになる自信を持ち帰国することが出来ました」

テストマッチの結果を報告致します。日本が5対103で負けました。少しも差がない選手で構成されたチームを相手にして、100点とられましたよ。サッカーで言うと、10数点で負けると一緒です。普通なら、これだけの差があるときは自分達のやり方を深く反省し、相手の良いところを積極的に取り入れようとするものだと思いますが、それどころか、差がなくて、自信を持って指導が出来ると思えるのはご立派としか言えません。オーストラリアでのティーンージラグビー人口が16,294人に対して、日本はそれの3倍近い43,790人です。

僕は日本が２０１１年のラグビーワールドカップ開催国になるのを反対している理由はまさしくもこの点に尽きます。

もし開催国になったら、現在の構造的要因によって強いい国代表を生む事の出来ないラグビーの構造そのものが正当化され、今でも積極的に取り組む姿勢が殆ど見られない必要な改善をする刺激が無くなることを危惧します。

This month's Rugby Football, the official magazine of the JRFU, contains a report on the Japan high school representative team's Australian tour this August. One passage reads as follows:

“There was absolutely no difference in the ability and accuracy of the skill of the individual players of the Australian and Japanese players. The Japanese high school coaching staff can return assured that their coaching methods to improve the players’ability are not wrong and approach their coaching with renewed confidence”.

The Japanese high school team lost the test match versus the Australian high school team by 5-103. A team comprised of players of the same skill level posted 100 points on the Japanese. In soccer terms, this is the same as losing by more than 10 goals. In any normal world, the losers would redress their approach to the sport and attempt to incorporate the better facets of the opponent. But not in Japan. I stand in awe of the coaches’ability to state that there is no difference between the teams and that the current coaching methods are valid. I note that whereas there are 16,294 teenage rugby players in Australia, Japan boasts almost three times this number, at 43,790.

These comments lie at the heart of my opposition to Japan being the host of Rugby World Cup in 2011.

If Japan gains hosting rights, it will see this as a justification of the structure of the sport in Japan, one totally incapable of producing top-class players. I fear that it would remove any incentive for the JRFU--already showing almost a total lack of will to address the structural flaws in Japanese rugby--to make any of the necessary improvements.
