世界1になった直後に開催されるトリノ五輪に出場できない15才の浅田真央ちゃん。

確かに可愛そうに感じますが、日本も賛成し作成されたフィギュアスケート年齢制限は「骨格が出来上がる前の若年齢でジャンプなどを繰り返すことによる影響を考慮し、五輪・世界選手権の出場資格をその前年の７月１日に１５歳に到達していなければならない」とのルールが日本も賛成し、1996年6月に設定されました。

まだ成長期の子供の体に過剰負担をさせてはいけないとの思いがこのルールの背景にあります。僕は大賛成です。

でも、子供の体のことを全く考慮する事のない日本の部活を必死に守ろうとする日本のスポーツ界の関係者が真央ちゃんの五輪出場を強く希望する気持ちでいっぱいでしょう。

余談ですが、本日夕方のニュースで「５才の天才卓球少女」が報道されて、年齢制限を設けておかない日本のスポーツではここまで来たかと思いました。

15-year old Mao Asada will not be representing her country at the Turin Olympics in early-2006, despite having recently won the figure skating title at the most recent Grand Prix Final.

Yes, it seems a shame that she can not attend the Olympics but we should remember that Japan was one of the 108 countries that in June 1996 voted in favour of the age limit requiring that Olympians have turned 15 by June 30 of the year prior to the Games, due to the possible adverse affects of excessive repetition of jumps in training before the bones are strong enough.

A genuine concern for the excessive burden on children's bodies lies behind the rule, a concern I support.

However, most people related to sport here in Japan, which exhibits an almost pathological disregard for the well-being of children's bodies in its approach to training, would probably strongly support making an exception for young Mao.
