Today is Setsubun(the day before the biginning of
spring on the calendar). My family do not habit of
eating Ehomaki(seasoned rice rolled in dried sea-
weed). that is probably the manner and the custom
of the Kansai region. Instead, eat Fukumame(roast-
ed soybeans which mean fortunate) as many as
your age. But I'm 74 years old and I can not eat so
many beans. And today there are plenty of other
goodies. So, I stopped to eat Fukumame. Hahaha.
"Setsubun" is a seasonal break, so it is in spring,
summer, autumn and winter, and was originally
not limited to February. The book of Heian period
(12th century), Chu'U-ki, describes " Tonight, it
is the Summer's Setsubun" and "Tonight, it is the
Autumn's Setsubun". The custom of decorating
the doorway with a sardine head in the holly is
to drive off the demon with its fishy smell.
The "Tosa Diary" also states, "How about the
gate of the small house, the head of Nayoshi
(aka Ina; young gray-mullet), the holly, etc."
It seems to have stabbed the head of a mullet
during the Heian period.
Speaking of which, the news at the end of
last month reported that a horde of mullets
had filled the river at Teraya River, Funatsu-
cho, Toba City, Mié Prefecture. The mullet is
said Shussé-uo(a fish whose name is changed
as it grow). Its name in regions varies.
I think that the fish's name "Nayoshi" in the
"Tosa Diary" may possibly be derived from
na(name)-yoshi(good).
