　第一段落は以下の文です。

　Akio was a first-year high school student. The Handball Club was one

of the most popular clubs in his school. One day,in the second week

in April,Akio went to the court to see the practice with one of his

friends,Masashi.Akio was surprised that all the players threw the ball

very fast. They saw the player who was the best on the team. He was

Tetsuya,the captain of the team. Akio and Masashi wanted to play like

him,and they joined the club the next day.

　最初の文の主語はAkioです。術後は動詞がbe動詞ですから補語といっしょに訳しますから

次のように区切ります。

　Akio / was a first-year high school student.

　「明男は高校一年生だった。」

　次の文は主語はThe Handball Clubです。動詞がbe動詞ですから補語といっしょに訳し、

前置詞inで区切ります。

　The Handball Club / was one　of the most popular clubs / in his school.

　「ハンドボールクラブは、最も人気のあるクラブだった、彼の学校では。」

　次の文は2行にも及ぶ長い文章ですが頭から短く区切れば難なく訳せます。

　カンマで区切り、前置詞で区切ります。主語はAkioです。述語はwentです。その後は前置詞で

区切ります。

　One day,in the second week / in April,Akio went / to the court / to see

the practice / with one of his friends,Masashi.

　「ある日、第２週に、4月の、明男は行った、コートへ、練習を見るために、彼の友達の一人ま

　　さしと。」

　次の文の主語はAkioです。述語はwas surpraised、that以下の文が目的語です。that以下

は主語、動詞がある文ですのでそこも主語、述語に区切ります。all the playersが主語、

threwが述語、the ballが目的語、very fastは副詞です。

　Akio / was surprised / that all the players / threw the ball /　very fast.

　「明男は、驚いた、すべての選手たちが、ボールを投げたことに、とても速く。」

　次の文の主語はThey、述語はsaw、目的語はthe player、who以下はthe playerを修飾する

関係代名詞節です。関係代名詞の前でも区切ります。

　They / saw / the player / who was the best / on the team.

　「彼らは、みた、選手を、最も優秀な、チームで。」

　次の文の主語はHe、後は全て述部です。

　He / was Tetsuya,the captain of the team.

　「彼は哲也だった、チームの主将である。」

　最後の文の主語はAkio and Masashi、述語はwanted、目的語はto play、前置詞likeの

前で区切ります。andという接続詞でもうひとつの文が続きます。主語はthey、述語はjoined、

目的語はthe club、the next dayは副詞です。

　 Akio and Masashi / wanted / to play / like him,and they / joined the

club / the next day.

　「明男とまさしは、欲した、することを、彼のように、そして彼らは、クラブに入会した、

　　翌日。」
