In January 2003, Police Chief Lawrence K. Mahuna appointed a Strategic Planning Committee composed of management personnel to collectively revise the Police Department's mission and vision statements, based on the department's core values, and devise ways to improve the performance of the department to better serve the community.

Committee members were charged with the responsibility of coming up with statements succinctly expressing the vision and mission of the Hawaii County Police Department. The vision statement was to describe a desired future, and the mission statement was to provide direction for the department. The committee members agreed on the following:

The Hawai'i County Department of Human Resources periodically recruits applicants for police officers. Recruitment is now closed.

Requirements
An applicant must:要件/応募者はそうしなければなりません:

・Be at least 21 years of age by closing deadline.
・Be a U.S. citizen (either born or naturalized), national or permanent resident alien of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.
・Have a valid driver’s license from Hawai'i or comparable license from another state.
・Have a combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school.
・Be qualified to carry and possess any firearm or ammunition in accordance with state and federal laws. Persons convicted of domestic violence, whether convicted of a misdemeanor or felony, will not be considered for a position because federal law prohibits them from carrying firearms.
An applicant must have:

・Good physical condition and agility according to standards set by the County’s Pre-Entry Medical Examination Guide.
The Pre-Entry Medical Examination Guide is on file for public inspection at the Department of Human Resources, 101 Pauahi Street, Hilo, Hawai'i 96720, the Kona Mayor's Office, and at the county's website at www.co.hawaii.hi.us.

Benefits
The starting salary for Police Officer I is $4,028 a month, or $48,336 a year. Officers receive night differential pay and time and a half for holiday work and overtime.

・Uniforms and equipment / furnished by the Hawai'i Police Department.
・Automobile subsidy / monthly allowance for private automobiles in police use, plus fuel and oil and tax-exempt motor vehicle registration if position requires the use of a vehicle.
・Retirement / eligible for retirement with 25 years of police service in Hawai'i.
