Kenzaburo Oe passed away on March 3rd. He was 88
years old.
I'm really sorry. I lost someone dear to me again.
Although he was old, Mr. Oe was the most necessary
ideological support for me to look at and talk about the
progress of Japan and the world.
Kenzaburo Oe was my most trusted literary figure.
He was the only novelist I had been reading consistently
since my school days. I once heard from someone that,
from the author's point of view, the reader of a novel is
supposed to be about 10 to 12 years younger than
author. I've also heard that it's good to have an age
difference of about 15 years between teachers and stu-
dents. I am exactly ten years younger than Mr. Oe. I
think that Kenzaburo Oe, whom I found while reading
books in my school days, was exactly what I was told.
... Once upon a time, I lived in a relatively close
neighborhood near his residence, so I saw him in his
usual appearance only twice. As I passed by, I was
amazed at how well-known literary figures had blend-
ed in with the people on the pavement almost unno-
ticed. I thought I could see Mr. Oe's personality. Now,
I remember that appearance fondly.
I would like to express my heartfelt condolences by
displaying 30 images of Mr. Kenzaburo Oe's book
from my collection. Of course, I have other his books
that I have read. I couldn't buy the first edition of
"SHIIKU(farm)", but when I was a high school student,
I got it at a pocket-size paperback and bound it with
my own lettering. It is in a pile of paperbacks and
cannot be put out immediately here.
