Blu-Ray versus HD DVD(2)
Blu-Ray versus HD DVD(2) There has been the competition of dominance for the DVD's next generation format between Blu-Ray and HD DVD,and it reminds me of that of VHS and Betamax. At that time, Sony tried to continue producing Betamax because they developed it. However Sony stopped producing Betamax many years ago. Betamax lost the race although it had a higher quality.Quality is not the only factor to win the race of selling products. Strategy to expand the market is more important. Sony learned it when they failed to become the leading company of the new video format. This time, Sony developed Blu-ray and made a big effort to win over the US major movie companies, such as Warner Bros., Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, Buena Vista Home Entertainment. And those companies have decided to adopt only Blu-ray format for their DVD. Netflix, a big online DVD-rental company, announced on February 11th that they were giving up on HD DVD format. Paramount Home Entertainment and Universal Studios Home Entertainment supported HD DVD up until a few months ago, but they have decided to shift their DVD format from HD DVD to Blu-ray completely.Under the circumstances, mamy customers seem to prefer Blu-ray to HD DVD. Thus, a retailer like Wal-Mart treats Blu-ray as the next standard DVD format and has decided to sell it predominantly. Now that Toshiba stop supporting HD-DVD, Blu-ray is most likely to become the standard of next generation's DVD format.I appreciate the competition seems to end soon because both customers and companies couldn't be happy if the race continues for a long time.☆未チェックです***パラマウントとユニバーサルスタジオがまだHD DVDを支持していると日記に書いたのが今年の2月中旬ですが、その後すぐに相次いでこの2社もブルーレイへの転換を決めたようで、これでアメリカ大手映画会社6社すべてブルーレイ方式でDVDを作ることになったようです。
