The West Coast may be the incubator of the digital revolution but comparatively few know that Texas was a hotbed as well. They didn’t call it the Silicon Prairie for nothing. (Thank you, Compaq in Houston and Texas Instruments in Dallas.) That was the inspiration for series co-creator Christopher Cantwell as the show he came up with was a smart and knowing ensemble drama — the title is computer lingo for code that causes a computer to stop functioning — starring Lee Pace, Toby Huss, Mackenzie Davis and Scoot McNairy as a ragtag crew of geeks trying to create a knockoff IBM PC. If the Dallas of “Dallas” was one of big oil, big cars and big hair, the Dallas of “HCF” was one of cramped compacts, bad haircuts and scrappy, punk-rock attitude.
Classic Texas moment: Any time Huss’ John Bosworth character opened his mouth. He was as Texas as brisket for breakfast.
