Last night, around 2, my 10-year-old son, Oboya, said, "I hurt my right ear and can't sleep."

In fact, he has caught a cold for several days and had still a slight fever in that morning. So I felt that he had otitis media (an inflamed ear).

I phoned the emergency department of hospital immediately, where I used to take my children when they had an abrupt high fever at night time, and asked whether my son could see a doctor.

But the answere was "No".

The reason was that the hospital had stopped accepting emergency visits for the pediatrics a few years ago.

Oh, no!

Though I read a newspaper article the other day that reported lots of hospitals tended to close their pediatric departments because they paid little due to the decrease in the number of children, I never thought that the hospital had already closed its department!

It's such a bother for my family because we used this hospital very often when we got a sudden illness.

Anyway, I had to find an emergency hospital which accepted my son to consult a doctor at that very late night. Fortunately I found one and my husband took him by car.

After getting the medical examination, it became clear that he had otitis media as I thought. The docter gave him some painkillers and antibiotics.

They came back home around 3:30. My son took those medicine and he could sleep well at last.
