昨日、サンフランシスコの友人が、こんな面白いストーリーを送ってくれました。アメリカで出回っているそうです。

"One sunny day near the end of January 2009, an old man approached the White House from the park across Pennsylvania Avenue, where he'd been sitting on a bench. He spoke to the U.S. Marine standing guard and said, "I would like to go in and meet with President Bush."

The Marine looked at the man and said, "Sir, Mr. Bush is no longer president and no longer resides here."

The old man said, "Okay", and walked away.

2009年、1月ももう終わろうとしている、ある晴れた日、ペンシルバニア・アベニューの向かいにある公園のベンチでずっと座っていたある老人が、ホワイトハウスに向かって歩いて行った。　そしてその老人はホワイトハウスの前で警備に立つ海兵隊員に言った。

「中に入って、ブッシュ大統領にお会いしたいのだが。」

海兵隊員は老人を見てこう言った。「おじいさん、ブッシュさんはもう大統領じゃないんですよ。もうここには住んではいないんです。」

その老人は「分かったよ。」そう言って立ち去って行った。

The following day, the same man approached the White House and said to the same Marine, "I would like to go in and meet with President Bush."

The Marine again told the man, "Sir, as I said yesterday, Mr. Bush is no longer president and no longer resides here."

The man thanked him and, again, just walked away.

次の日。昨日と同じ老人がホワイトハウスにやってきて、昨日と同じ海兵隊員にこう言った。「中に入って、ブッシュ大統領にお会いしたいのだが。」

ガードマンはもう一度、その老人に言った。「おじいさん、昨日言ったように、ブッシュさんはもう大統領ではないんですよ。ここにはもう住んでいないんです。」

老人は海兵隊員に再びお礼を言って、立ち去った。

The third day, the same man approached the White House and spoke to the very same U.S. Marine, saying "I would like to go in and meet with President Bush."

The Marine, understandably agitated at this point, looked at the man and said, "Sir, this is the third day in a row you have been here asking to speak to Mr. Bush.  I've told you already that Mr. Bush is no longer the president and no longer resides here.  Don't you understand?"

３日目、また同じ老人がホワイトハウスにやってきて、また同じ米海兵隊員に話しかけた。「中に入って、ブッシュ大統領にお会いしたいのだが。」

その海兵隊員がイライラするのは無理もない。彼は老人を見て言った。「おじいさん、これで３日連続だよ。おじいさんは、ブッシュさんと話がしたいと言う。だが僕はすでに言ったはずだ。ブッシュさんはもう大統領ではない。ここにはもう住んでいないのだと。」

The old man looked at the Marine and said, "Oh, I understand.  I just love hearing it."

The Marine snapped to attention, saluted, and said, "See you tomorrow, Sir."

老人はその海兵隊員を見て言った。「ああ、分かっているさ。僕はただその言葉を聞くのが大好きなんだ。」

海兵隊員はさっと姿勢を正し、敬礼した。

「また明日、おじいさん。」
