三連休もあっという間に終わりです。原油高にも関わらず、町中は車であふれてました。通勤電車でないと、ついつい、気が散って、新聞が読めません。明日からまた1週間始ります。新聞読もう（笑）。
そうはいっても、週末の新聞を読まないのはもったいないので、何とか。。。こういうとき、他にヘラトリを読んでいる人の存在は大きいです。日記のコメントで、sayorinさんにご紹介いただいた記事を早速読んでみました。

Gender is probably the most restricting force in American life, whether the question is who must be in the kitchen or who could be in the White House.

すごく意外でした。日本ではその通りだと思っていましたが、アメリカでも、女性の進出って難しいんですね。gender problemは本当に難しい。

This country is way down the list of countries electing women and, according to one study, it polarizes gender roles more than the average democracy.

way down：もっと下がって

polarize：分裂する formal
to divide into clearly separate groups with opposite beliefs, ideas, or opinions, or to make people do this

アメリカで下の方なんて言われたら、日本なんて底？

always doing what you are told to do, or what the law, a rule etc says you must do

someone who is often asked to give their opinion publicly of a situation or subject

なぜ、女性が問題になるか、ということについて、つきつめると・・

because children are still raised mostly by women

regress：後戻りする

so men especially tend to feel they are regressing to childhood when dealing with a powerful woman

特に男性は、強い女性と付き合うと、母親に育てられたことを思い出して、子供時代に逆行してしまいがち。

The caste systems of sex and race are interdependent and can only be uprooted together.

uproot：根絶する、引っこ抜く
to pull a plant and its roots out of the ground

suffrage：投票権◆アメリカでは特に女性の選挙権(women's suffrage）

まあ、そんな感じ。

女性問題は女である私から考えても難しい問題だと思う。特にヒラリーさんの場合はね。強い部分を見せれば、上述のregressってことで、男性から敬遠される？し、弱い部分を見せれば、そんな弱い人に国を任せられるのかって言われる。じゃあ、どうしろと？強い部分を見せることが逆に弱みになるなんて、ほんと女性的な問題ですね。
ちなみに、涙に関しては、どの記事だったか忘れましたが、政治家の一つの武器だとか。政治家が涙を見せるのは決して女性の政治家だけではなく、男性の政治家も結構泣いてるとありました。涙って誠意の一つの証かな（笑）。

new oilに心ひかれて（笑）。海底深いところらしいのですが、新しい油田が見つかって、ブラジルがOPECに加盟する日も近そう。ブラジル自身はsugar cane（サトウキビ）を原料としたethanolで車を動かしてますものね。化石燃料は輸出に回すことができる。

中国、インドが振興の経済国として注目されていますが、ブラジルも広い領土を持っているし、こうした燃料輸出国となると、その発展も将来性を感じることができますね。
