今日も元気に電車の中で英字新聞を読みました。今日は読みたい記事がいっぱいで、大変でした（笑）。

まずは何度も問題になっているoilの問題。この場合はバイオオイルの方。parm oilやsoybean oilやcorn oilとか。原油高と環境問題によって、植物性油が食用ではなく、車用に流れている。これによってガソリンだけでなく、食料の値段も高騰しているという記事。化石燃料のみならず、食用油からも目が離せない状況ですね。

This is the other oil shock. とはなかなかうまい表現。

But in the developing world, cooking oil is an important source of calories and represents one of the biggest cash outlays for poor families, which grow much of their own food but have to buy oil in which to cook it.

西洋では取るに足らない支出である料理用の油でも、貧しい国に住む人たちにとってはもっとも大きな現金支出。それだけではなく、食用油は重要なカロリー源でもる。自分たちの食べ物は自分たちで作るとしても、食用油は買わなくてはいけない。

私は大きく誤解してました。携帯小説って、発表の場が携帯なだけで、書いてるのはてっきりPCだと思ってたんですが・・・ほんとに携帯からアップロードしてたんですね！そうなると、やはりクオリティ的には本物の小説と比べると落ちるのかもしれません。でも、クオリティってどう判断するのか。まあ、携帯小説という一つのジャンルとして認めてしまうことが理解の第一歩？

これはなんとなくわかるかも。私もPCで文章を書くのと鉛筆で文章を書くのは全く違うから。とにかくリズムかな。鉛筆だと自分の思っているよりも遅いスピードでしか綴れないけど、PCだと、ほぼ自分が思っているのと同時にタイプできるから。

遅すぎるくらいでは？東大が英語だけで授業を行うコースを新設するそうです。米国にアジアの優秀な人材が流れていて、それを少しでもアジア圏内にとどめようと。同じアジア圏、国は違うけど、文化的には似ているところもありますしね。

This has caused concern among some academics that Asian students studying Asian societies may be overly influenced by the U.S. perspective of Asia.

東大は世界ランク15位。同様に中国も留学生を引き寄せようとしているらしい。

China has also grown as a magnet for overseas students.

英語は本当に道具ですよね。アメリカが好きとか、イギリスが好きとか、そういう問題ではなく、アカデミックな世界ではよりシビアに英語が道具として確立しているような気がします。

今後の東大のがんばりに期待大！
