77年から89年までのテレビやラジオ番組用に録音したものやライブ音源を集めたコンピレーションもの。
メンバーの組み合わせは録音日によって様々に変化している。個人的に一番萌えるのは
ジューン・テイバー、
フィル・ピケット、
サイモン・ニコルが含まれる81年のラジオ音源かな。
近年の
アルビオン・バンドには正直ピンと来ないことが多いから、これも少し迷った。でも参加メンバーにピケット先生の名前があるし大丈夫だろう、ととりあえず買うことに。2枚組で1500円なら別にいいかな、と貧乏性魂が働いたのもあるのだけど。
結論から言うと、好き勝手やっているアルバムだ。
自分たちの好きな曲を好きなアレンジで気ままに演奏、リスナー受けなんて気にしない。
私はどうしてもアルビオン=古楽ロックのイメージが抜けないのだけど、そんな勝手な幻想を打ち砕くかのごとく
チャック・ベリーまで披露。しかもエレキギターぎゅいんぎゅいん鳴らして実にオールドタイミーなロックンロールぶり。
その他、
ジョニ・ミッチェルの曲も取り上げている。
トラディショナルもいくつか入っているが、いにしえの英国音楽という雰囲気はそれほどなし。アレンジはごく真っ当、そこらに多発している無難な軽めポップス風のものが大半。
多く入っている朗読もわりかし軽めで重厚さは欠落している。
特別悪くはなかったけど良くもなし。何か作業をしながら流し聴くぶんにはいいけれど、これだけを聴き続ける集中力は私にはありませんね。
実際こうしてレビューを書きながら聴いている今でも、「ディスク2はすっ飛ばしてもいいかなあ」と思ったりしていることだし。
でもレビューするからには聴かねば…この時点でもうダメだ。
とりあえず聴いた。
おや…ディスク1より格段に良くなってるぞ。基本線は変わらないけども古楽わずかに復活、コミカル減哀愁増。聴き渋ることもなかったというわけか。
