The historian belongs not to the past but to the present. Professor Trevor-Roper tells us that the historian 'ought to love the past'.' This is a dubious injunction. To love the past may easily be an expression of the nostalgic romanticism of old men and old societies, a symptom of loss of faith and interest in the present or future.

　浪漫（ロマン）は、過去への思い入れでもあれば、未来への思い入れでもあり得る。過去への思い入れが過剰となれば、未来への思い入れの過少となり、逆に、未来への思い入れが過剰となれば、過去への思い入れの過少となる。大事なのは、過去と未来への思い入れの平衡である。この平衡感覚が狂うと、現在の判断が歪（いびつ）になってしまうのである。

Cliché for cliché, I should prefer the one about freeing oneself from 'the dead hand of the past'. History constructed by excerpting and combining the testimonies of different authorities I call scissors-and-paste history. I repeat that it is not really history at all, because it does not satisfy the necessary conditions of science; but until lately it was the only kind of history in existence, and a great deal of the history people are still reading to-day, and even a good deal of what people are still writing, belongs to this type.

Consequently people who know little about history (some of whom, in spite of my recent farewell, may still be reading these pages) will say with some impatience: 'Why, this thing that you say is not history, is just history itself; scissors and paste, that is what history is; and that is why history is not a science, which is a fact that everybody knows, in spite of groundless claims by professional historians magnifying their office'. -- R.
