| Madly in love w/ tabletop stove!
I’m not sure if I told you about this before, but tabletop stove (TS) comes in really handy after the heat settles and the cool air kicks in. Here’s whiy I think it’s cool:
[A] When it’s hot and humid, I cook 5-6 simple dishes (mostly boiled/marinated veggies and fried/grilled fish/meat), but with TS, I only cook 2 side dishes and ‘nabe’ (literally means ‘pot’ but in Japanese, but this indicates foods cooked in ceramic pots, esp. on tabletop).
[B] I can cook on the tabletop, so I can sit my lazy but* until we are done (I cook one dish at a time to minimize leftovers, so you can imagine how many times I get up during one meal).
[C] Hustle-free! Prepping ‘nabe’ is so easy! All you have to do is to chop veggie/meat! Besides, cooking fewer dishes means fewer dishes to wash (I don’t have a dishwasher). |
| Here comes the monster of a ‘fu’ or ‘ofu’ (baked/dried wheat gluten). I made broth (fish and kelp), chopped leeks and Chinese cabbages, put all those into the pot, then added ‘fu’ for this monster to soften up.
|
| Then I snip those monsters, add some other veggie/meat. When all the ingredients are cooked, we dip them in ‘nabe’ sauces (soy sauce + citrus/red pepper, broth + salt, et al.), and eat ‘em real hot! |
しかも味噌床の味噌ごとお鍋に入れるから、フツー捨てちゃう事になる味噌も美味しく食べられるんだよねぇ~♪ | Sometimes, I get carried away chopping ingredients for ‘nabe’ and have some leftovers. But not to worry, I can add some other stuff to change flavors the following evening. I started out with simple broth, and in this case, I added 'miso' (soy bean paste). |
| Day 3 --- I added Korean red pepper paste, sesame seed, Chinese chives, and Chinese noodles! So easy and so yummy! Beats any off-the-shelf ramen because all the goodness of meat and veggie seeped into the soup! |
Chinese Hot Sesame Pot!
My blogger bud, Pome-san gave me Ma-po Dou-fu sauce (Chinese Szechuan cuisine. Tofu cooked in a pepper + hot bean paste sauce), so I added sesame paste and Chinese soup stock to make hot sesame soup! I added sliced eggplants and ground chicken into the sauce, brought it to boil...
| Then added bean sprouts and Chinese chives. When all is hot, serve in a bowl ‘as is’ (no sauce necessary). This noodle is really popular in Japan, and you can find ready-made soup stock in supermarkets but once you make it, you’ll never think about buying one of those. |
