Last night every body made there "BIZEN" dishes! made by Andy, Martin, Julie 2009 Sep 17 "BIZEN":Stoneware made in Bizen, Okayama Prefecture, since the 12th century. Bizen is an unglazed stoneware usually fired with red pine wood. BIZEN CLAY is contains 3 percents iron and is dug many feet under rice fields. This clay is highly plastic due to the high proprtion of organic matter in contains. After careful drying to avoid cracking; if it drys quickly, it would have some carcking. Then last night before I sleep, I covered pieces with a plastic bag. Students need trim their bottoms next week, then I have to put them in the plastic containers to make them "right" hardness to carve them. You can not trim clay bodies if it too soft or too hard, you always wait until it becomes "right" hardness. If it is too soft you will destort your pot, and if it too hard, you can't cut through with metal tools. Later I will put them in plastic containers to keep moisture. made by Diane Next week, we will try wrap them around with straw cords to make Fire-cord decoration ware called "HIDASUKI" ware. HIDASUKI: Cords made of straw and soaked in salt water are wrapped around the unglazed pots. The cord burns away, leaving a red shiny streak. Sample work for BIZEN "HIDASUKI" by Eriko Kuroda Continue! POTTERY TOKYO : http://www.pottery-tokyo.jp/
