KLS is a little-understood condition that has no known cause or cure. It causes episodes of excessive sleeping that can go on for weeks and is associated with behavior changes such as irritability, hypersexuality, and binge eating. In Ball's case, her parents must maintain constant vigilance（警戒、寝ずの番）when she is in the midst of a sleep episode, forcing her to wake each day to eat and go to the bathroom before returning to sleep.
